"ONE HUNDRED YEARS
Reached by Mr. Jacob Coss of Harrison Township

Some Entertaining Points About an Interesting Old Man Who is no Doubt the Oldest Person In the County -- His Numerous Descendants

On last Tuesday, Jacob Coss of Harrison township, near Mooresville, was one hundred years old. And a hale and hearty old gentleman he is, too. Full of vigor and in possession of all his faculties, he bids fair to live several years yet.
The hundredth anniversary of the birth of Mr. Coss was anticipated by two months and was elaborately celebrated on October 3rd last in order that fair weather might be had for the occassion. Mention of the celebration was made in the Advertiser at the time.
To few persons is allotted one hundred years of life, and Mr. Coss is the one interesting representative of such a prolonged life in Ross county. To Rev. I. Roberts Mackay, now of Bainbridge, who was present at the birthday celebration and read an interesting paper on the Coss family, the Advertiser is indebted for the following facts on the subject:
Mr. Jacob Coss is descended from that brave old "Dutch" army which was said to "Have taken Holland," his grand parents having come from that country to Sussex county, New Jersey, where his father, Jacob Coss, (this is an error, his father's name is George) was born, who marrying removed to Northumberland county, East Buffalo Valley, Pennsylvania, where was born to him six sons and two daughters.
The wife of his youth dying, he married a lady by name Mary Cleckener, by whom he had seven sons and one daughter.
Jacob Coss, our hero, was the second son by the second wife. he was born December 11th, 1788, and accompanied his father in the year 1800 to Ohio, settling in Belmont county, where in August, 1809, he married Miss Catherine Parker, by whom he had four boys and three girls.
One son and one daughter, together with their mother, who died October 18th, 1861, have passed away.
Mr. Jacob Coss removed from Belmont county to Ross county in 1833 and purchased the farm he now lives on from one Thos. Hanks, who had entered it from the public domain. It is perhaps the only farm in Ross county now owned by the second purchaser. The house he now lives in was built by Mr. Hanks in 1816, as shown by a stone with the date rudely cuty, placed in the chimney near the top.
The fertility of the family will be exhibited presently, its longevity, at least, of himself and five brothers, by the following:
A picture hanging on the wall of this ancient residence is of Mr. Coss and five brothers. It was taken in Wheeling, West Virginia, twenty-five years ago, when he was on a visit to Belmont county to see his brothers. All are dead now and himself alone lingers a hale, hearty, well preserved old gentleman, bidding fair to make a respectable inroad into the second century.
The names and ages of these brothers were as follows: Daniel, 79; Jacob, 75; Adam, 73; David, 69; James, 65, and Benjamin Coss, 63.
The united age of these brothers was 424. The aged patriarch has done well by his country, as his numerous posterity to the fifth generation will amply testify.
They are a thrify, intelligent, industrious, temperate family, citizens to be desired in any community, and are scattered abroad in our wide country.
Let us who in tabular form the statistics of the family at this hundredth anniversary of the birth of their common father.
Jacob Coss and Catherine Parker were married A.D. 1809.
Their total descendants so far as could be ascertained are 242. Total living, 222, two children and eighteen grandchildren deceased."
