Below is the Application for a 2nd Class pension, number 24250, for which Charles applied. The document  is dated 8th July 1911. Take note that the Alabama Judge of Probate is E. F. Crook. The witness from South Carolina is E. R. Johnson, comrade in arms.

Charles testifies that he enlisted in the service of the State, or Confederate States, as a Private in Company F, in the 5th S.C. regiment, on the 13th Day of April 1861 at Orangeburg, S.C. That he was honorably discharged from such services on 5th of May 1865 and he did not desert the service of the Confederate States, that he was wounded at the battle of 1st Manassas in the state of Virginia, that he is unable to make a living on account of general disabilities. At the time of filing this application he is 75 years old.
