CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
HOURS: 30 hours biennially
Please note that the following applies only to licensees who have never held any license type that requires CE. A licensee who is adding a license type that requires CE to an existing license type that does not (for example, a Group 11 licensee adding a Group I life, accident and health license) will have a prorated license renewal schedule and a prorated CE schedule. If license is issued at least 12 months but less than 24 months before renewal, 15 hours are required. Temporary Local Recording Agents converting to Permanent Local Recording Agents only need to complete 15 hours of CE upon receiving permanent license. after the first renewal, 30 hours will be required.
Course subject requirement: Licensees must complete courses that are approved for the same lines in which the license is held. LH/PC-combined licensees can take courses approved for either license.
Compliance date: License renewal, biennially
Carryover of excess hours: Not allowed
Course repetition: Courses may not be taken for credit tmore han once in a biennial reporting period.

  • Independent self-study
  • Classroom study
Monitored final exam: Self-study final exams are not required to be monitored.
Nonresidents: Agents complying with their home state requirement may be exempt based on their home state's reciprocal agreement with Texas. Most agreements require agents to show proof of Compliance with their home state requirement. (Call or write the insurance department to request a specific list.) Nonresident PC agents are exempt.
Exemptions:
Please note that the following applies only to licensees who have never held any license type that requires CE. A licensee who is adding a license type that requires CE to an existing license type that does not (for example, a Group 11 licensee adding a Group I life, accident and health license) will have a prorated license renewal less than 12 months before renewal, no hours are required. Life, accident and health licensees who maintain a license solely for the purpose of receiving residual or renewal commissions (must be requested in writing)
Individuals who have been licensed 20 years or more (must be requested in writing) Extensions or exemptions for good cause may be granted by the Education Coordinator (must be requested in writing)
The following licensees do not have a CE requirement. Group II licensees

Variable Contract Insurance Agents Surplus Lines Insurance Agents
Life Insurance Counselors Prepaid Legal Insurance Agents
Health Maintenance Organization and Single Service HMO Agents Risk Managers
Reinsurance Intermediaries, both Brokers and Manager
Method to certify completion: The agent keeps the original certificates of completion in his or her files for four years. Proof of compliance should be furnished only If requested by the Insurance department.
