the good word about fine audio, video and music, sharing this most
wonderful experience of creativity, art and science managed and operated by
an unpaid staff. We not only feature some of the latest A-V
products available, we also conduct loudspeaker, amplifier and
cable/accessory design, build and evaluation projects. We also
conduct computer audio/music and desktop/headphone audition and
presentation activities.
We have recently formed
a
PC/Computer Music Panel
that will investigate
and evaluate various approaches to achieving the best sound from
this fast growing branch of audio. It's here folks and here to
stay and sounding remarkably good. We're not talking MP3 here, but
hi-rez CD quality and better music files and playback!

Meeting Minutes
and Notes...
With great success we
launched the club designed and built 9.5" ported sub-woofer's and
paired them with the specially matched 2-way stand-mount speakers,
also club designed and built that we had launched some months
earlier. We also employed a club designed and built electronic
crossover that produced a truly seamless integration of all the
drivers.
It appeared that the large
crowd was in near full agreement that the performance was first rate
and greater than expected, all while the building remained standing!
Much to the relief of
Virtual Properties, our host meeting site.
We also sourced the speakers
with
club member designed and built 25 wpc mono tube amps for the satellites and

Part two of the club
speaker build project audition and club designed and constructed
loudspeaker cables with Computer Music Playback + Raffle of
quality classical CD's
More complete Meeting notes
will be posted Soon
Using a Dell laptop with
music management
software
and steered by club
member David Snyder
we played digital files
of various bit depth (up
to 24/192) we played music into a
Wyred4sound DAC (via USB
2.0 from the laptop)
connected to a Cambridge
Audio Azur 840A
integrated amplifier
into the Club's upgraded 2
way speakers (crossover
upgrades with enhanced
HF section capacitor).
Also auditioned were
sets of hand
wound, multi conductor,
18 g, silver over
copper, Teflon insulated speaker
cables designed and
built by club members.
For music play, members
provided brief descriptions of
music samples and why
selected (see below for
description of this
process). A
Lexicon universal CD
player was also
available for direct
play of discs.
Overall impressions were
that the crossover
enhancements produced
greater smoothness,
detail, dynamic response
and tighter bass.
Several listeners
thought the club-built
10' length speaker
cables were more open,
spacious and detailed
than off-the-shelf
equivalents.
Business and meeting
announcements and
Election;
During this very well
attended meeting with several new guests, President John
Morrison made short business announcements including conducting
an election of two officers.
The candidates were confirmed
and installed by acclimation
(since there were no
other candidates),
we re-elected Dennis Juranek as Vice President and Paul Tarver
as Treasurer for another
full year term.
Congrats to all for an
excellent job.
Many thanks to all for

Successful launch of the Marshall Leach
Memorial "Club" loudspeaker
Secretary Tom Horner's Excellent Meeting Notes
Dave Snyder's Excellent
Meeting Notes
We featured the club's
own designed and built 2-way stand mount dynamic driver loudspeaker.
This premium parts yet affordable to home-build loudspeaker honors
and adds to the fine design work of the late Dr. Marshall Leach,
noted Ga. Tech EE professor. This speaker may be used when we
have electronics at meetings yet no loudspeakers.
Design highlights are; 1"
Scanspeak silk dome ferro-fluid tweeter, 6.5" Scanspeak mid-woofer
w/heavy voice-coil/basket structure. Front ported bass-reflex, L-R-C
xover with premium (yet not over costly) parts all encased in a
mid-size, heavy 3/4" MDF, internally braced cabinet ready to
be finished. Material/parts costs are a bit over $500 for a pair that may
be built with reasonable skill in a well equipped home woodshop.
Design and assembly accomplished in less than a month with solid
response down to 40Hz and beyond with sensitivity of appx. 87 db.
A pair of 27 w triode configured tube amps powered the speakers to
high listening levels in the large listening room (by
designer/builder Sam Papadas) with good bass. Parts lists and
design formulas were distributed to club members. Core team;
Dennis Juranek, Sam Papadas, Ed Stiles, Paul Tarver, Oliver Endsley
and others. Congrats to team.
Attendees shared their fave CD's of all formats and USB ported music devices
to give the new speakers a good workout. We also employed the
top performing Marantz Reference integrated 90/140 solid-state amp,
PM-15S2 to great effect, no stress or strain. Guests
were welcome, light refreshments were provided.
Gear featured - New
OPPO BDP-93 Blu-Ray universal player, Cambridge Audio DACMagic,
Benchmark DAC-1, and the
versatile Logitech Squeezebox Touch. In addition we'll have
the infamous ADCOM preamp
designed by Nelson Pass, and tube amps designed/modified and built
by Sam Papadas and Ed Stiles. To
round out the amplification
we'll have a Marantz Refrence Integrated amplifier and PS Audio
Digital Link-II D/A. We will play all formats of CD, DVD-A, SACD
and FLAC files, USB Flash Drive and SD cards.

MartinLogan Loudspeakers and
"H. Johnson" JAZZ Radio Host
Over 40 members and guests observed and
heard the latest model
$1995 Electrmotion
™
ESL loudspeaker from the veteran manufacturer noted for their
famed electrostatic/hybrid creations, engineered right here
in the USA for over 30 years. Other than CEDIA last fall in
Atlanta, we were the first public group to see and hear this top
performing floor standing loudspeaker, one offered at a very
competitive price with 90 db sensitivity and reasonable
impedance of 6 ohms, an easy drive for the 70 wpc EAR tube power amp
applied in this demonstration.
Listening impressions summary;
General attendee comments were that M-L appears to have solved the
Electrostatic panel and subwoofer integration challenge. Whereby the
blend between the two different types of technology, materials,
construction and electrical characteristics is basically seamless
allowing listeners to enjoy the music and not be distracted by the
speakers.

We featured special guest
presenter "H" Johnson Sat night radio host from WABE FM 90.1.
"H" returned for

Members and guests were invited to bring their fave
Jazz CD or LP's to share with the attendees.

Tribute to Dr. Marshall Leach -
Members and Friends,
It
is with a great deal of sorrow that
I have to tell you of the passing of
one of the greats of audio
engineering and an equally talented
teacher and mentor. I am not going
to tell you about Marshall Leach's
life because a number of others will
have done a much better job than I
can. I did not know him and I never
met him... but through contact with
many people whose lives he affected,
I felt as if I knew him. It is
ironic that during our meeting this
past Sunday, his name kept coming up
over and over again. We got to enjoy
a set of speakers he designed and
after hearing them, everyone wanted
a pair! Below are a couple of links
you can use to find out a little
more about him and also a memoriam
from one of our members who studied
under him. As you will see, he
didn't just have students... he also
had friends and that in itself tells
us a lot about the man! He will be
missed.

Members and special guest
hobbyist displayed and demoed their working vintage gear, with
stellar examples by Sherwood, Fisher, Dynaco, SAE, Heathkit, Pilot,
LEEK, Leach, Layfette and many others including several vintage loudspeakers and
turntables. Examples were either factory stock, mods or kits.
The sound was terrific and makes one wonder how far we've come with
all our fancy and expensive high-end gear!!!
Each demonstrator had a
designated table to demo and describe their gear, many of which
have been lovingly maintained and restored. The full house
attendees had a terrific time and we conducted a first rate raffle
of CD's donated by Phil Muse and Chuck Bruce, and 2 heavy-duty

An afternoon of great
music listening and learning...
2 - 5 PM
Audio
designer Robert Cunningham of Cunningham Audio
demonstrated his latest handcrafted tube preamps models P1 and
P2 to great effect. We also enjoyed Canary CA303 (WE 300B
tube based mono-blocks) and Bedini

tower loudspeakers. We also enjoyed the multi-format Lexicon CD
player and PS Audio Digital Link outboard D/A processor.
This was some of the best sound we have ever experiences in our
meeting listening room. Quite an accomplishment since we
have appreciated many different and effective systems in this
room before. Congrats to Robert Cunningham and his good
work to make this program possible.
"It's

Also on the program was Dr. Tommy Joe Anderson of ACA Digital Recording.
His informative yet tongue-in-cheek presentation on the
history of classical music should convey extra college credit.
Titled: Concert, Classical

yourself more dangerous in discussing and listening to classical
music", This presentation was a blast...
Special Note! Attendees

Tribute -
William Marshall Leach, Jr.
By, former EE student Harold Taylor
Born in
Abbeville, SC on Feb. 23, 1940
Departed on Nov. 20, 2010 and
resided in Tucker, GA.
Professor of
Electrical Engineering, Georgia
Institute of Technology, 1972 to
2010
When I was
high-school senior in 1979, I first
learned of Dr. Leach from a friend
of mine who was a freshman at
Georgia Tech. At the time, I was
taking electronics classes in
Vocational school, and working
part-time as a salesman in an audio
store. He told me Georgia Tech had
one of the best audio engineering
professors in the country. That
sealed my decision on where I would
go to school.
Dr. Leach possessed an unparalleled
understanding of engineering and
science. However, what made Dr.
Leach so rare and wonderful was the
simplicity and clarity with which he
could convey complex concepts,
whether in lecture or in his written
class notes and published works.
He devoted his life not only to
teaching electrical engineering, but
to making his students better people
in the process. Never was there a
time when he was unavailable,
irrespective of whether or not a
student's question was directly
related to the course material.
Not only did I thoroughly enjoy the
transistor circuit design, op-amp
design and audio engineering classes
I took from Dr. Leach, I also
remember with great fondness the
many hours I spent in his office
when he gave freely of his time to
discuss audio ideas I had, weird
science topics or even current
events.
Dr. Leach’s audio lab was always
open for students to work on
projects, and he never hesitated to
offer assistance when students got
stuck on a design or measurement.
He loved music and audio
reproduction with a passion, but he
also understood the human nature of
music listening. He often referred
to “Baranek’s Law”, which said
(paraphrasing) that one’s own system
is often believed to be the ultimate
reference (whether true or not, of
course).
I often got the
impression that Dr. Leach remembered
virtually every one of his
students. Never was a classroom
lecture too serious or too rushed
for Dr. Leach not to include
humorous anecdotes, which would
never fail to begin with, "A former
student of mine..." The squinting
eyes and wide smile would come over
his face each time.
His anecdotes were always valuable
teaching moments to help crystallize
a fundamental concept. The more
serious ones would often begin with,
"It has been my experience...", and
at the end, "you will find the
following...".
His teaching
style and passion for audio and
electrical engineering made the
topics inspiring and enjoyable. As
a result of his instruction, I have
devoted much of my life outside of
work for the last 20 years to
developing better electronics and
loudspeakers.
Dr. Leach was a one-of-a-kind
professor, a true gentleman and a
dear friend. I will miss him
greatly.
