           Completed Program-  Sunday, January 20, 2013, 2 - 5 PM,

Our special guest presenter was Jim Smith, (his second, follow-up visit) published author and his "Get Better Sound" from your listening room and Hi-Fi.   Jim's seminar was truly fantastic and informative.  Despite a big football playoff day for the Atlanta Falcons, we had a very good turnout with everyone having a good time and welcoming several guests and new members.  Jim also had good sales of his books and DVD's.   We'll soon post meeting notes for your information.  Member Lee Scoggins also gave us pointers on CD collecting and how and where to select the best. We'll also distribute his tips to members.  Many thanks to Jim, Lee and all the other volunteer folks who made this fine program possible.

We also launched the club's newly purchased integrated 60 wpc tube amplifier (Triode/Pentode operation) to good effect and paired with the first rate club designed and built 2-way stand mount loudspeakers.  We also auditioned a brand new OPPO 105 full featured universal CD player with excellent results as well.   Everyone was impressed with its excellent value and performance.

Check out our new website under construction, soon to go live, go ahead and bookmark it now!      http://a-vcoa.clubexpress.com

                                               2 - 5 PM

WireWorld Cables and Accessories, and co-presenter Century Audio, Inc. Loudspeakers and Electronics

We hosted a seminar and product demonstration featuring WireWorld Founder/Designer David Salz and National Sales Manager Larry Smith visited us from Florida.   Our co-presenters were Andy and Kanda Feng of Century Audio, Inc., of China/Atlanta featuring a variety of products including; The Stage 6 two-way floorstanding loudspeaker with 1" tweeter & 6.5" midbass driver. The amplifier was the Century EI50 an integrated vacuum tube of 50 WPC, w/remote and electronic auto-bias.   We also featured a hi-rez front end featuring a EAR (Esoteric Audio Research) Acute-III CD player/24-192 D/A converter (w/vacuum tube output stage w/remote output level) and EAR 912 professional vacuum tube line stage unit to round out the music enjoymnet, attendees were invited to bring their fave CD or computer music file.

The seminar featured the latest cable, accessory and design principal discussions. David and Larry also conducted USB cable comparisons with impressive results as we moved-up the product line. USB cables are found in prominent use in "Computer Audio" systems, one of the fastest growing areas in audio today. This was a fun and interesting, "ear-opening" demonstration where "straight-line/wire" connections vs several actual USB cable models were compared.  The differences were quite obvious and forever confirms that there are improvements in performance as more sophisticated models are employed.

We also conduct an exciting raffle of items donated by WireWorld + CDs donated by Phil Muse.   Many thanks to the donors.

WireWorld very generously, donated the following items for our raffle:

  • 1)     Stratus 2 Meter Power Cord (STP2.0MUS) -

  • 3)     Silver Starlight USB Cable (SSB1.0M)  -

                         Modular Electronics, Inc.

              Custom Design, Build and Servicing

                                 Meeting Notes

Design, build and servicing Chief Benny Amina of Roswell, Ga., presented his latest custom design products. The good size group of attendees were able to learn more about his electronics servicing operation. Attendees are invited to bring their fave CD or LP for plenty of music play.

Benny demonsted two of the preamps he designs and builds builds, two of the power amps, and two types of his own speaker design.  For those of you who build your own equipment, this was a chance to meet Benny in person, perhaps for the first time, and discuss with him the finer points of building speakers and tubed equipment.

Completed Activity - fun and informative retrospective thru popular music of the 1960's...

                         Sunday, July 15, 2 - 5 PM

Hosted by MVPower A/V shop Alpharetta, Ga. 6225 Shiloh Rd., Suite E, Alpharetta, Ga. 30005.

We regret that due to illness, Jim Smith was unable to conduct his famous "Get Better Sound seminar". We will definitely reschedule and we wish Jim a speedy recovery.

The Program and Meeting Notes

Among several activities Sunday we celebrateed the 50th anniversary of the Beatles coming to America, we enjoyed a fun retrospective of American music at the time and the impact the Beatles. Member Phil Green gave an informed introduction to the American Pop/R&R sound at the time, leading into a retrospective by Paul Tarver on the early Beatles, including the "skiffle" sound that led to their early popularity, the impact it had on American music, and where it changed American Pop/R&R music. Several recordings were played (via computer music files) as examples beginning with the early Liverpool and German activities. Phil and Paul are serious students of the area of Pop and R&R music and sent us back to the days of our wreckless youth and the music that changed a generation of American Pop/R&R. (Yes, several of us have no trouble remembering the Beatles coming to America in the early 1960’s, even to Atlanta and the open air stadium downtown!) Both Phil and Paul are great speakers and we all learned something about the pre Beatles era and their big splash in America in the early to mid-60's.

Many thanks to Phil and Paul and our gracious hosts at MPower AV, Dave Striplin and Joe Saxon.

We also enjoyed NAD’s latest cutting edge 390DD amplifier using direct digital amplification. NAD has packaged it to feature their optional MDC module that you can buy and insert into the unit which will allow the integrated to use HDMI audio as well as output back to a display device. This is cool because you can now have a 2 channel set up along with a video display for a blue-ray in 2 channel.

We also featured NAD's award winning Visio iPod system that is a neat inexpensive way to have iPod audio in a portable format. NAD has won several awards for this including an award at CES this past year for best new product in their category.

Totem Acoustics is joining the MPower's product lineup including the phenomenal Dreamcatchers bookshelf and the Hawk Tower loudspeakers. The Totems from Canada are likely the most top performing, cost effective smaller speakers you have ever seen or heard with bass to shake the earth without subwoofers. We also enjoyed the remarkable Dali bookshelf speakers as well, all great values and real music makers.

And we held a nice Raffle...

Sunday’s raffle prize was a Rega Fono mini MM Phono amp donated by MV Power AV and a nice stack of CD' by Reference Recordings and others donated by the club and Phil Muse and T-Shirts donated by MOJO Record Shop owner Rand Cebus of Roswell Ga. We had several happy winners, many thanks to the donors!

And finally, the club has purchased a Vinyl Flat device and Lee Scoggins has been using it and reports that it works quite well. Lee gave a nice description of the device and it really works effectively, after a slow heating over 4 hrs the LP comes our flat as a flitter! The $149 device will be available to "dues paid" club members, contact Lee Scoggins to schedule a loan. leescoggins@gmail.com

Club Speaker Project - Woofer(s) Launch + Music Listening Pgm. featuring CD, SACD, PCM up to 24/192, Computer Music File Sources

Meeting Minutes and Notes...

With great success we launched the club designed and built 9.5" ported sub-woofer's and paired them with the specially matched 2-way stand-mount speakers, also club designed and built that we had launched some months earlier.  We also employed a club designed and built electronic crossover that produced a truly seamless integration of all the drivers.

It appeared that the large crowd was in near full agreement that the performance was first rate and greater than expected, all while the building remained standing!  Much to the relief of Virtual Properties, our host meeting site.

We also sourced the speakers with club member designed and built 25 wpc mono tube amps for the satellites and featured club designed cables and other goodies.

Special thanks to our design/build team; Sam Papadas, Dennis Juranek and Ed Stiles and others.

Plenty of time was allocated for member fave recordings, hard media and computer music files.  And of course a OPPO 95 player/processor was a top performer.  We played a great variety of music including Classical, Opera, Jazz, Rock to mention a few...

We welcomed several guests, new members and accepted several renewals at the new annual rate of $40.  We're on a roll boys and girls, growing and havin' lots of fun!!!

We also re-elected Dennis Juranek as VP, Chuck Bruce as VP of Industry Relations and Tom Horner as Secretary.

Part two of the club speaker build project audition and club designed and constructed loudspeaker cables with Computer Music Playback + Raffle of quality classical CD's

More complete Meeting notes will be posted Soon

Using a Dell laptop with music management software and steered by club member David Snyder we played digital files of various bit depth (up to 24/192) we played music into a Wyred4sound DAC (via USB 2.0 from the laptop) connected to a Cambridge Audio Azur 840A integrated amplifier into the Club's upgraded 2 way speakers (crossover upgrades with enhanced HF section capacitor). Also auditioned were sets of hand wound, multi conductor, 18 g,  silver over copper, Teflon insulated speaker cables designed and built by club members.  For music play, members provided brief descriptions of music samples and why selected (see below for description of this process).  A Lexicon universal CD player was also available for direct play of discs.

Overall impressions were that the crossover enhancements produced greater smoothness, detail, dynamic response and tighter bass. Several listeners thought the club-built 10' length speaker cables were more open, spacious and detailed than off-the-shelf equivalents.

Business and meeting announcements and Election;

During this very well attended meeting with several new guests, President John Morrison made short business announcements including conducting an election of two officers.

The candidates were confirmed and installed by acclimation (since there were no other candidates),  we re-elected Dennis Juranek as Vice President and Paul Tarver as Treasurer for another full year term.   Congrats to all for an excellent job.

Many thanks to all for hosting this fine program with lots of music playback and a fine stack of classical CD's donated to the Raffle by Dr. Phil Muse.   Major contributors were David Snyder, Ed Stiles, Dennis Juranek, Sam Papadas and others, all a great team of gifted and hard working folks...  Special thanks to Kimber Cable for providing internal connection/hook-up wire, spades and boots.

PROCESS INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMITTING MUSIC SAMPLES:

Members/guests were given an envelope by David Snyder entering the meeting area.  The contributor's name was written on the outside of the envelope along with song name or disc/track(s).  The disc/media was placed inside and handed to David Snyder. David uploaded the music to his PC creating a "playlist". When the recording was announced, the member gave a brief introduction of the music and why he/she wanted to share it with others. The envelope was returned at the end of the meeting.  All quite efficient and well managed. many thanks Dave...  Few if any glitches occurred with this process.

Successful launch of the Marshall Leach Memorial "Club" loudspeaker

Secretary Tom Horner's Excellent Meeting Notes

Dave Snyder's Excellent Meeting Notes

We featured the club's own designed and built 2-way stand mount dynamic driver loudspeaker.  This premium parts yet affordable to home-build loudspeaker honors and adds to the fine design work of the late Dr. Marshall Leach, noted Ga. Tech EE professor.  This speaker may be used when we have electronics at meetings yet no loudspeakers.

Design highlights are; 1" Scanspeak silk dome ferro-fluid tweeter, 6.5" Scanspeak mid-woofer w/heavy voice-coil/basket structure. Front ported bass-reflex, L-R-C xover with premium (yet not over costly) parts all encased in a mid-size, heavy  3/4" MDF, internally braced cabinet ready to be finished.  Material/parts costs are a bit over $500 for a pair that may be built with reasonable skill in a well equipped home woodshop.  Design and assembly accomplished in less than a month with solid response down to 40Hz and beyond with sensitivity of appx. 87 db.  A pair of 27 w triode configured tube amps powered the speakers to high listening levels in the large listening room (by designer/builder Sam Papadas) with good bass.  Parts lists and design formulas were distributed to club members.  Core team; Dennis Juranek, Sam Papadas, Ed Stiles, Paul Tarver, Oliver Endsley and others.  Congrats to team.

Attendees shared their fave CD's of all formats and USB ported music devices to give the new speakers a good workout.  We also employed the top performing Marantz Reference integrated 90/140 solid-state amp, PM-15S2 to great effect, no stress or strain.  Guests were welcome, light refreshments were provided.

Gear featured -  New OPPO BDP-93 Blu-Ray universal player, Cambridge Audio DACMagic, Benchmark DAC-1, and the versatile Logitech Squeezebox Touch.  In addition we'll have the infamous ADCOM preamp designed by Nelson Pass, and tube amps designed/modified and built by Sam Papadas and Ed Stiles. To round out the amplification we'll have a Marantz Refrence Integrated amplifier and PS Audio Digital Link-II D/A.  We will play all formats of CD, DVD-A, SACD and FLAC files, USB Flash Drive and SD cards.

MartinLogan Loudspeakers and

"H. Johnson" JAZZ Radio Host

Over 40 members and guests observed and heard the latest model $1995 Electrmotion ESL loudspeaker from the veteran manufacturer noted for their famed electrostatic/hybrid creations, engineered right here in the USA for over 30 years.  Other than CEDIA last fall in Atlanta, we were the first public group to see and hear this top performing floor standing loudspeaker, one offered at a very competitive price with 90 db sensitivity and reasonable impedance of 6 ohms, an easy drive for the 70 wpc EAR tube power amp applied in this demonstration.

Listening impressions summary;

General attendee comments were that M-L appears to have solved the Electrostatic panel and subwoofer integration challenge. Whereby the blend between the two different types of technology, materials, construction and electrical characteristics is basically seamless allowing listeners to enjoy the music and not be distracted by the speakers.

Dave Snyder's excellent meeting minutes

We featured special guest presenter "H" Johnson Sat night radio host from WABE FM 90.1.  "H" returned for part-II of his fun and informative expo on Jazz and Jazz history.  Members and guests were invited to bring their fave Jazz  CD or LP's to share with the attendees.

Dr. Marshall Leach Tributes

See our tributes about the recent passing of famed Ga. Tech Electrical Engineering Professor Dr. Marshall Leach.  Known world-wide, he was beloved by many admirers, engineers students and non-students alike.

Please scroll down further for former student Harold Taylor's personal tribute to Dr. Leach...

Tribute to Dr. Marshall Leach - Members and Friends,

It is with a great deal of sorrow that I have to tell you of the passing of one of the greats of audio engineering and an equally talented teacher and mentor. I am not going to tell you about Marshall Leach's life because a number of others will have done a much better job than I can. I did not know him and I never met him... but through contact with many people whose lives he affected, I felt as if I knew him. It is ironic that during our meeting this past Sunday, his name kept coming up over and over again. We got to enjoy a set of speakers he designed and after hearing them, everyone wanted a pair! Below are a couple of links you can use to find out a little more about him and also a memoriam from one of our members who studied under him. As you will see, he didn't just have students... he also had friends and that in itself tells us a lot about the man! He will be missed.

And don't forget the AXPONA Stereophile show in Jacksonville - March 5-7,†2010.   www.axpona.com

Tribute - William Marshall Leach, Jr.

By,  former EE student Harold Taylor

Born in Abbeville, SC on Feb. 23, 1940
Departed on Nov. 20, 2010 and resided in Tucker, GA.

Professor of Electrical Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, 1972 to 2010

When I was high-school senior in 1979, I first learned of Dr. Leach from a friend of mine who was a freshman at Georgia Tech.  At the time, I was taking electronics classes in Vocational school, and working part-time as a salesman in an audio store.  He told me Georgia Tech had one of the best audio engineering professors in the country.  That sealed my decision on where I would go to school.

Dr. Leach possessed an unparalleled understanding of engineering and science.  However, what made Dr. Leach so rare and wonderful was the simplicity and clarity with which he could convey complex concepts, whether in lecture or in his written class notes and published works.

He devoted his life not only to teaching electrical engineering, but to making his students better people in the process.  Never was there a time when he was unavailable, irrespective of whether or not a student's question was directly related to the course material.

Not only did I thoroughly enjoy the transistor circuit design, op-amp design and audio engineering classes I took from Dr. Leach, I also remember with great fondness the many hours I spent in his office when he gave freely of his time to discuss audio ideas I had, weird science topics or even current events.

Dr. Leach’s audio lab was always open for students to work on projects, and he never hesitated to offer assistance when students got stuck on a design or measurement.  He loved music and audio reproduction with a passion, but he also understood the human nature of music listening.  He often referred to “Baranek’s Law”, which said (paraphrasing) that one’s own system is often believed to be the ultimate reference (whether true or not, of course).

I often got the impression that Dr. Leach remembered virtually every one of his students.  Never was a classroom lecture too serious or too rushed for Dr. Leach not to include humorous anecdotes, which would never fail to begin with, "A former student of mine..."  The squinting eyes and wide smile would come over his face each time.
His anecdotes were always valuable teaching moments to help crystallize a fundamental concept.  The more serious ones would often begin with, "It has been my experience...", and at the end, "you will find the following...".

His teaching style and passion for audio and electrical engineering made the topics inspiring and enjoyable.  As a result of his instruction, I have devoted much of my life outside of work for the last 20 years to developing better electronics and loudspeakers.

Dr. Leach was a one-of-a-kind professor, a true gentleman and a dear friend.  I will miss him greatly.
