Revised Injury System
Rather than the current "one-size-fits-all" injury system that discriminates against players who miss very little playing time in real life, there would be a new system utilizing SAVING THROWS. Saving Throws are used in table-top wargaming and Fantasy-Roleplaying games like Dungeons and Dragons, and give a unit or character the opportunity to avoid taking damage if they roll a certain number or better on a 20-sided die. More powerful units or characters have lower Saving Throws and a better possibility of not getting hurt.
The same concept would be applied to our injury system, with the measure of player durability being GAMES PLAYED; for pitchers, it would be GAMES + GAMES STARTED. There would be an increased chance of having an injury possibility occur, but this would be offset by each player having an opportunity to make a Saving Throw and avoid the injury. A player who only appeared in a few games would have a very high saving throw, perhaps needing a 19 or 20 to avoid injury, while a player who played in almost every game might save on a 2 or higher.
For batters, injury possibilities would be those on their batter cards. Pitchers, however, would ignore the injury possibility on the pitcher's batter card and would have a chance of being injured when on the mound if a 6-12 is rolled by the batter. To equalize the chances for batters and pitchers, when a roll of 6-12 occurs, the manager of the team in the field must roll a d20, with 1-16 being a chance for the pitcher to be injured, while 17-20 will be a chance for an injury to a player in the field or in the dugout or bullpen. This is to simulate the fact that pitchers can face over 1000 batters in a season, while batters will only end up with around 725 plate appearances. On a 17-20, a subsequent die roll will determine who may be injured.
On any plate appearance when the pitcher's pitch count exceeds his target pitch count, an injury to the pitcher may occur on any roll of 6-11 rather than 6-12; this simulates the increased chance of injury for a tired pitcher. If a 6-11 is rolled, the manager must visit the mound and if the pitcher is fatigued at all, the injury is AUTOMATIC; no Saving Throw will be given for pitchers working beyond their target pitch count! This is a disincentive for managers to leave a tired pitcher in the game. If the pitcher is NOT fatigued when the manager visits the mound, no injury has occured and the pitcher may remain in the game if the manager had not already been to the mound previously in the inning.
