THE VIRGIN BIRTH OF CHRIST
Luke 1:26-27 (KJS)

Luke 1:26,27  And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a 
city of Galilee, named Nazareth,  To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was 
Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name [was] Mary. 

INTRODUCTION:

The virgin birth of the Lord Jesus Christ is the foundation of our Christian faith.  
Not only is it important but absolutely necessary in order to have a perfect 
sacrifice for our salvation.

I.	THE MISSION OF THE MESSIAH

Luke 1:31-35 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a 
son, and shalt call his name JESUS.  He shall be great, and shall be called the Son 
of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father 
David:  And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom 
there shall be no end.  Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I 
know not a man?  And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall 
come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore 
also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. 

A.	Christ came to seek and to save poor lost sinners.

Luke 19:10  For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. 

B.	Christ came to show the sinner God’s love and power.

John 3:16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that 
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 

Luke 10:19  Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and 
over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 

C.	Christ came to satisfy the spiritual longing of the saved.

Isai 58:11  And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in 
drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like 
a spring of water, whose waters fail not.  


II.	THE MIRACLE OF THE MANGER

Luke 2:7 (KJS) And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in 
swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them 
in the inn. 

A.	It was a dawning of a new day - four hundred years of silence ends.

B.	The darkness had passed - the Light of the world now shines.

John 8:12  Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: 
he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. 

Isai 9:2  The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that 
dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. 

C.	The deliverance has come for those in bondage.

Isai 61:1-3  The Spirit of the Lord GOD [is] upon me; because the LORD hath 
anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the 
brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to 
[them that are] bound;  To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day 
of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;  To appoint unto them that 
mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the 
garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of 
righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified. 

III.	THE MULTITUDE OF THE MESSENGERS

Luke 2:8-14  And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, 
keeping watch over their flock by night.  And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon 
them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore 
afraid.  And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good 
tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.  For unto you is born this day in 
the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.  And this [shall be] a sign 
unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 
 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising 
God, and saying,  Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will 
toward men. 


IV.	THE MASSACRE OF THE MALES

Matt 2:16-19 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was 
exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, 
and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time 
which he had diligently enquired of the wise men.  Then was fulfilled that which 
was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying,  In Rama was there a voice heard, 
lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping [for] her children, 
and would not be comforted, because they are not.  But when Herod was dead, ... 

A.	The jealousy of Herod; afraid of loosing his power.

B.	The judicial system should be just not unjust.

C.	The judgement he faces; still hearing the screams.


V.	THE MOURNING OF THE MOTHERS

Matt 2:17,18   Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, 
saying:  "A voice was heard in Ramah, Lamentation, weeping, and great 
mourning, 
Rachel weeping [for] her children, Refusing to be comforted, Because they are no 
more."  (NKJV)

A.	Mothers’s babies so sweet, so near, and so innocent.

B.	Mourning, great weeping, no comfort.

C.	Missing children could have been great leaders.

VI.	THE MYSTERY OF HIS MURDER

Acts 7:52 (NKJV) "Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And 
they killed those who foretold the coming of the Just One, of whom you now have 
become the betrayers and murderers, 

1Pet 3:18 (NKJV) For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, 
that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by 
the Spirit, 

A.	The sovereign Son of God dying as a substitute.

Gene 22:10-13  And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay 
his son.  And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, 
Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here [am] I.  And he said, Lay not thine hand 
upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest 
God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only [son] from me.  And 
Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind [him] a ram caught in a 
thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for 
a burnt offering in the stead of his son. 

John 1:29,30  The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold 
the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.  This is he of whom I 
said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. 

B.	The sentence of sin demands the death of the sinner.

Gala 2:20  I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ 
liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son 
of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. 

C.	The satanic power over death had to be seized.

Reve 1:18   I [am] he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for 
evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. 

1Cor 15:55  O death, where [is] thy sting? O grave, where [is] thy victory? 

VII.	THE MEMORIAL OF MERCY

1Tim 1:14-16 And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith and 
love which are in Christ Jesus.  This [is] a faithful saying and worthy of all 
acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am 
chief.  However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ 
might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on 
Him for everlasting life.  (NKJV)

Lame 3:22,23  [It is of] the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because 
his compassions fail not.  [They are] new every morning: great [is] thy 
faithfulness. 

CONCLUSION:

Long ago, there ruled in Persia a wise and good king. He loved his people. He 
wanted to know how they lived. He wanted to know about their hardships. Often 
he dressed in the clothes of a working man or a beggar, and went to the homes of 
the poor. No one whom he visited thought that he was their ruler. One time he 
visited a very poor man who lived in a cellar. He ate the coarse food the poor man 
ate. He spoke cheerful, kind words to him. Then he left. 

Later he visited the poor man again and disclosed his identity by saying, "I am 
your king!" The king thought the man would surely ask for some gift or favor, but 
he didn’t. Instead he said, "You left your palace and your glory to visit me in this 
dark, dreary place. You ate the coarse food I ate. You brought gladness to my 
heart! To others you have given your rich gifts. To me you have given yourself!" 

The King of glory, the Lord Jesus Christ, gave himself to you and me. The Bible 
calls Him, "the unspeakable gift!" 

Our Greatest Need 
 
If our greatest need had been information, God would have sent us an educator; 
If our greatest need had been technology, God would have sent us a scientist; 
If our greatest need had been money, God would have sent us an economist
If our greatest need had been pleasure, God would have sent us an entertainer;

But our greatest need was forgiveness, so God sent us a Savior.
