News
"Spitzenzeitungen" with an
international influence:
- Die
Welt Probably the largest circulation
non-tabloid German daily newspaper; general news for
everyone.
- Frankfurter
Allgemeine Zeitung a venerable paper with
international esteem, has no free internet version
but does provide an English language version on the web.
- Die
Presse from Vienna is one of the large middle of
the road Austrian dailies.
- Neue
Züricher Zeitung On line edition of the
main Swiss newspaper, a selection from the print
edition; includes an "English
Window" summary of stories
"Seriöse Zeitungen"
whose influence extends beyond their local area:
- Rheinischer
Merkur Intellectual weekly, Catholic
orientation
- TAZ
die tageszeitung Left wing/alternative daily,
headquartered in Berlin
- Tagesspiegel
Middle-of-the-road Berlin daily newspaper
- Die
Zeit Weekly magazine in newspaper format,
intellectually inclined
- Frankfurter
Rundschau General German daily
newspaper; also has an English
language edition with switchable English/German
versions of articles
- Rheinische
Post From the Ruhr and lower Rhein
comes this general daily newspaper; what sets it off
from many other such German language newspapers is that
it contains a very extensive selection of German and
international news
in English which is updated Tuesday and Friday
evenings at about 10 p.m. (MEZ) / 5p.m. (EST). The
English version includes articles from all the
intervening days since the last update.
- Süddeutsche
Zeitung Major establishment left-center
newspaper from Munich. This link brings you to a "beschleunigte
Seite" with a summary of the news. Click on "Druckausgabe"
on the right of that page for access to the main
newspaper.
- Stern Not
exactly a weekly news magazine - perhaps a weekly
news magazine for a broader audience than a US news
magazine has. No exact US parallel, a combination of
Time and People and Entertainment Today.
- Spiegel
One of the two large circulation weekly news
magazines, intellectual and negative bent
- FOCUS
The other weekly news magazine, more business and money
oriented than Spiegel
- Profil
is the weekly news magazine from Austria
- Facts,
the Swiss weekly news magazine.
- The Wiener-Zeitung
is neither a commercial nor an independent newspaper but
the official organ of the Austrian state; the original
function was somewhat similar to that of the US Federal
Register but the format and range has been expanded;
at first glance it's slick appearance leads one to
believe it is a "normal" newspaper.
Particularly helpful for finding current theater,
concerts, and other cultural events.
- Wirtschaftsblatt
for Austrian economic and business news; detailed
stock and bond market coverage.
