Most
memorable diving experience: "Many
years ago, while diving the wreck of the German submarine U-352,
my wife Linda and I were separated from our dive boat. The mooing
line had accidentally come loose from the wreck and the boat had
drifted off. We made a two-stage decompression in open water and
found ourselves bobbing among large swells, drifting in the Gulf
Stream 30 miles from land, with no boat in sight. We floated back
to back and fruitlessly searched the horizon for 25 minutes (which
seemed like hours). This was before the invention of the 'Safety
Sausage', so we blew our whistles and waved our fins in the hope
that someone might spot us. We never lost hope, but we did start
to discuss our options. In the lucky synchronization of two wave
troughs, we finally spotted our boat - miles away! Fortunately,
they also spotted us at that moment. Today, we both carry safety
sausages, signal mirrors, flares, and really big whistles. We hope
we'll never need them again!"
