Information and Guidance for

Patients, Family, and Friends

By Cheryl A. Wildes

What do you see in this picture? It is a Calvin Klein ad; for what I am not sure. What I see when I look at it is an advertisement of a deadly disease whose number of victims is rapidly growing. The image portrays people who are the idols of our youth. Yes, these young people depict the "ideal" body. Despite the fact that the greatest majority of us could never attain these physiques, many, especially young women, deeply desire to have bodies like these. And many will go to all lengths to attain their goal. This often means stringent, unhealthy diets, laxative abuse, and even forcing themselves to vomit. Although society's portrayal of the "perfect body" may not be the soul source of eating disorders, I feel they play a big part. But this page was not created to place blame. I created this page to provide you, the victims, families and friends of people with eating disorders, information about what they are, what may cause them, and how to get support and help.
