A motorcycle whizzes past you and parks a few blocks away. The rider is
dressed for professional racing, with the name "TENOH" written across the
back of their suit. As the rider steps on to the pavement, you wonder if it's a boy
or a girl. Surely you'll be able to tell when the helmet is off. But as the rider
takes off the helmet, you are even more confused.
Their hair is cut short, but there are hoop earrings in each ear. Some one yells at them from across the street: "Hey Haruka!" Haruka Tenoh. You decide that it was a girl, but as you walk away, you're intrigued by this strange young woman. Why would she dress that way? Who knows? But if she's comfortable that way, more power to her.
But strange as she is, no one would guess that she is really Sailor Uranus, guardian of the Space Sword, one of the Three Talismans. Her odd, masculine behavior perfectly compliments the feminine traits of her partner, Sailor Neptune. With her faithful companion, she searched for the Three Talismans, unaware that she carried one herself. But besides racing, she is also a talented piano player, a skill you wouldn't expect to find in someone like her.
Sailor Uranus (and Haruka) always seems cold, sometimes even cruel. But I think she is afraid to get close to anyone, afraid she might get hurt. She is only able to open up to Michiru (Sailor Neptune), occasionally Usagi, and every once in a while to Makoto, who looks up to her with child-like admiration.
But perhaps one of the most noteable facts about Haruka, is her relationship with Michiru. The two are much closer than friends, both in and out of battle. Haruka gets jealous when Michiru flirts with guys, and sometimes even posessive. But I suppose that is not so unthinkable. She behaves like a man in every other aspect of her life, so why wouldn't she there? I wish people would get off their case. I think that their relationship is beautiful (even if it is out of the ordinary), and that without them, the series wouldn't be complete.
By the way, if you've got a nice GIF of Haruka (manga only, please) that you'd like to donate, I'd very much appreciate it.
