Hotaru Tomoe: Little Firefly

A pale, dark-haired girl sits alone on a park bench. She is breathing hard, as if she had athsma. A little girl trips and falls in front of her, crying because of the cut on her knee. The older girl kneels beside her and comforts her. She places her hand on the wound and right before your eyes, it closes. The child looks frightened and runs away without so much as a thank-you. Sadly, Hotaru Tomoe sits down on the bench again, coughing as though moving about caused great pain.

Strange as it may be, this weak young girl is really Sailor Saturn, who has enough power to destroy entire planets with just three words. Her deadly weapon, the Silence Glaive, is a shocking contrast to her gentle, healing nature. As Sailor Saturn, she takes up a completely different personality, changing from a shy school girl to a deadly force only to be called upon in the most dire need.

Hotaru is perhaps the most complex, tragic (and confusing) character in the entire Bishoujo Senshi story. A victim of a laboratory explosion, more than half her body is made up of machinery built by her father to save his young daughter's life. Her mother was killed by the same explosion, and while her father works day and night in his laboratory, she is left to wander around their empty mansion alone. Her strange ability to heal has alienated her from her classmates, who are some what afraid of her.

Her tortured soul houses two conflicting spirits. One, the evil Misstress Nine, seeks to conquer the world, while the other, Sailor Saturn, seeks to prevent this by destroying the world first. The end result is a tragic split. Literally she splits apart, killing herself and Misstress Nine.

But from the wreckage comes the cries of small baby. For even in the midst of destruction, hope still lives. And so, Hotaru was born again as a baby, with a new chance for a happy, healthy childhood. And that oppertunity was taken. Since her father was killed, the other Outer Senshi took her and raised her themselves. She grew up like a normal, happy little girl until one day Sailor Saturn appeared in her mirror and sent the memories flooding back. She returned to her former age and fought for good alongside the other senshi. Phew... that's a long story!
