Lima, Peru
by David K. Johnson
I enjoyed the summer weather in Lima. The mornings are sunny and very humid. The afternoons are overcast, with highs in the upper 70s. Lows at night are in the low 70s.
Lima's streets are filled with cars and buses all day long. The buses come in all sizes, from mini-vans to school bus size. The large buses look "well used". Horns are used frequently. Taxis use them to attract business. Cars use them to keep the flow going.
About half the cars have car alarms, and every few minutes one goes off. No one pays any attention to them. They also seem to be used as an alternative to using a horn.
At night, however, this part of Lima (Miraflores) quiets down. There are a lot of people out on the streets and in the sidewalk cafes.
I had lunch at a small, "local" restaurant. An appetizer (sea bass ceviche), chicken milenesa, French fries, rice "pudding", a fruit cup and a glass of purple "refreshment" - all for about $2.00. Fortunately my stomach agreed with it. Other meals at larger restaurants cost $10 - $15, and a person could spend much more.
