NC Historical Preservation Society, Davie County page The non-profit Archaeological Conservancy is trying to preserve an archaeological site in Davie County. The site is a Late Woodland period village that was occupied from around A.D. 900 to A.D. 1500. The site was first discovered in 1995, when a farmer plowed through several burials, bringing pieces of human bone to the surface. During two excavations, archaeologists found 26 human burials, 19 features such as pit and refuse areas, and a high concentration of well-preserved artifacts. The site is considered to be the most significant site of its type in North Carolina.
