Records of von Bardeleben's exist in the area that is now Germany at least as distantly as 1159. The historical origin of the family was the 'Rittersitz' [knightseat] of Barleben which is north of Magdeburg. By the 1400's we find the family has broken into a series of branches and located themselves in other parts of [what is now] Germany and Prussia
