Kattenbruch
- Ancestral Home of the DeBardeleben Family> |
| > |

One
of the DeBardeleben "mysteries" was the precise location of
Arthur Franz Ferdinand von Bardeleben's home - a place called
Kattenbruch. Thanks to research tools now available and
especially thanks to Sylvia and Guy Shannon who visited the old
home site and local historians, we now have pictures!
Kattenbruch is a
farm (Hof) and is situated in Kreis Grafschaft Schaumburg near Rolfshagen in
Niedersachsen. This puts it roughly 30 miles Southwest of Hannover. It's has been said that the farm no
longer exists. The earliest records of our family in that location mention "Rotcherus miles
dictus de Bardeleue" in the year 1281. The map of Kreis Grafschaft Schaumberg (done in the early 1800's)
is one of the few which actually showed Kattenbruch by name. The images below are of the area in the original map, along
with the same area on a current map (mapquest.de). Kattenbruch
is about halfway between Rolfshagen and Borstel (two villages that are 2 miles apart). All
of this is ESE of the large city of Hannover near the autobahn A2. Nearby towns include Minden (DeBards
are of the "Minden Line"), Rinteln, Detmold and Lübbecke - all mentioned frequently in von Bardeleben
places.
The images below show the original
manor house (built around 1663) and several outlying buildings.
These were torn down around 1884 after the farm had passed into
the hands of it's current owners. The color image shows
the house which is currently on the property.
