Dennis Barrett's 1998 trip to India

I traveled to Hardwar, Uttar Pradesh, India in March-April 1998 to participate in the Hindu festival "Kumba Mela" which takes place there every twelve years. The flight to Delhi and bus to Hardwar (about 200 km northeast) took about 40 hours - a physical endurance test. I stayed in Shanti Mandir, the ashram of Swami Nityananda. It was a delightful home-away-from-home, a source of good and safe food, and a relief from the dust and crowds of the celebrations. A map of India shows the entire country, and a map of Uttar Pradesh shows a bit more detail. Hardwar is northeast of New Delhi on the Ganges River.
