The GNOME project has built a complete free and easy-to-use desktop environment for the user, as well as a powerful application framework for the software developer.

GNOME is part of the GNU project, and is free software (some times referred to as open source software.)

GNOME is included in pretty much every BSD and GNU/Linux distribution and works on many other Unix systems.

* Page size calculation for this template is based on a single 1-bit alpha image. Remaining page size calculations are in pairs for each of two graphic sets. The first number indicates the Internet Explorer and Netscape 4 templates, both of which use 1-bit alpha GIFs for the foot/banner graphic, totaling 15.0K for the two images required for mouseover. The second number indicates the two 8-bit alpha PNG foot/banner images used by the Mozilla template.

Note that the graphic file format is mostly irrelevant to files' sizes. What matters chiefly is an image's color and alpha depth. Graphic formats are varyingly supported by different combinations of browsers and platforms, thus the reason for the two. For a true 8-bit image, GIF's compression is less than 10% more efficient (9.8% for the the background image, for example).
