M1

M1 15 minute exposure

981016: M1 in a 15 minute exposure at -10°C. SBIG ST-8 in hi-res (9µ pixel) mode with Celestron C14 at f7.  Some tracking problems are evident in the oddly shaped stars, but this is a big improvement over my previous M1 image.  The main difference here is  more attention to focus, and a longer exposure.  This was taken at the Mid-Atlantic Star Party near Robbins NC, a very dark site for the east coast.  Taken at 6 AM, this image was my last of the evening, ending just as dawn started.  M1 is a supernova remnant.

Interesting information about the Crab (makes my effort look puny):

Chandra discovers x-ray ring around cosmic powerhouse in Crab Nebula

The image from the article above confused me a little bit because of some other images I had seen so I rotated it a bit and placed it side-by-side with the other image (Chandra x-ray image on left, Hubble visible light image -- 550 nanometers -- on right):

The image on the right is from the following SEDS article: Hubble views of the Crab nebula
Another interesting set of Hubble images of the Crab: Hubble views the Crab Nebula M1
