LOCAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
AUGUST 1, 2000

Normally, I use this space to provide you with a blow by blow description of events that take place at the membership meeting, i.e. reports, old business, new business etc., etc. This month I can’t provide you with the usual format because there were no Officer Reports. The President was not in attendance nor was the EVP. [Trying to reach the President during the day is a challenge but when she doesn't even show up to membership meetings sets a new low for 9510] The Secretary-Treasurer (Natalie) played the roll. He handed out a check to a retiring member.

The minutes of the previous meeting (June-2000) were distributed and acted upon. The financial reports for the months of May, June and July were distributed and acted upon [this is probably the only place where there is an income of close to a million dollars a year to squander and the contributors don't question what is done with it. Hell, even "The Sopranos" get an occasional question from the crew. The minutes of the Executive Board (June-2000) and any actions taken by the board were distributed and acted upon.

There was a brief utterance by the Chair of the Safety Committee on his latest triumph in bringing SBC to its knees over the issue of 'smoke detectors'. The chair of the Community Services Committee informed those present of the annual charity drive. The charity drive is usually a time when most stewards (loyalists to the "Queen of Hearts") are off the job soliciting. This year there will be others (non-stewards) getting in on some of the action. The reason there will be non-stewards (we were told) was to recruit "new blood" into the "organization". There was no old business or new business to come before the group. Rest assured, it was "no" business as usual!

There was no mention of the strike vote [which started 4 days later and continues as 8/20/00] taken by CWA members employed by "Verizon" (formerly known as Bell Atlantic, Nynex and GTE).
