Election Day June 2,
1998
Labor beats the
"Dragon"
(Prop. 226 defeated)
The
meeting lasted 34 minutes from start to finish (consumption of food time
excluded).
[Our world is a small
world]
The meeting was called to order
by the 'Queen of Hearts' at 6:30pm with the pledge of allegiance [the pledge we
had to say in school every day, not the 'pledge' to Nita!]
'Might makes
right' and when the 'Queens team' is the only one playing it doesn't take long
to "slam dunk" any opposition! That's exactly what happened when one person
made a motion to discuss the removal of stewards by her highness. After that it
was a smooth sail for the ship that barely floats. There was a quick M/S/C
(move, second and carry) to approve the minutes of the last meeting, the
actions taken by the 'Executive Horde' at it's meetings and the financial
reports for the last several months. The fact that the 'official' minutes were
changed due to a ruling by the District Vice-President declaring actions by the
membership had to be declared null and void didn't raise an eyebrow (except
from one person).
[In case you are wondering who the
person with raised eyebrows was and what she said, wonder no more! She was the
person who was found guilty by a Local 9510 trial court with double-dipping
(claiming and collecting wages from the union and the company for the same
period). In case you are wondering how much, it was for over $5,000 during the
Montoya regime. She is now an 'Area Steward' (funny how a loyalty change can
make such a difference). With a voice resonating moral outrage, she cried out;
Can the National Union do that? Answer: Obviously!]
Next up,
nominations for the election of delegates to the CWA Convention to be held in
Chicago the latter part of August. Normally there are anywhere from 20-30
people running for these coveted slots (6) on who will be part of the 'team' to
represent Local 9510. This time only 10 chose to run! Was it because the
convention is in Chicago? Was it because it (convention) was only scheduled for
2 days, making for a short vacation period? Who knows?
There was a full
moon the night of nominations. In keeping with what sometimes happens when
there is a 'full moon', Local 9510 had a "looney eclipse". Vivian Thunell
nominated Mike Milliman (aka 'big nil') as a delegate. See
"Looney
Eclipse" to find out why I call it that!
The election for the
delegates is over and the winners?
| Stan Millican (aka "The last honest person left standing") | 360 |
| Marie Watt (aka "I am the GCC") | 353 |
| Greg Summerell (aka "Rainman") | 339 |
| Teri Renish (aka "look for me on every ballot") | 331 |
| Mike Milliman (aka 'big nil') | 323 |
| Barry Weston (aka 'bullwinkle) | 320 |
The also rans?
| Rich Burke (aka "boy toy to the Queen of Hearts") | 305 |
| Vivian Thunell (aka "hand maiden to the Queen of Hearts") | 292 |
What does the election mean to you and me? Not much, but I do have
one prediction! Come to the August meeting and you will probably see a motion
to send the alternates so the two (2) "also rans" can accompany the "Queen of
Hearts" and the delegation she will lead, to Chicago.
Cut back to the
'normal order of business' with a report (5 minutes) on the Lucent
strike.
Old Business--None!
New Business--None!
Good and
Welfare--Norm Whitford, a retired member from GT came to get the retirement
grant given by the Local to members. Norm was one of the few left who were
participants of the 150 day strike against GT California from 1963 to March of
1964.
Meeting adjourned at 7:05PM with 62 members present!
