GREG SUMMERELL
(aka
'Rainman')

Vice-President (AT&T Unit)
Nice guy! Everybody likes Greg Summerell although some call him
Sufferall. He took out Del McBryde (known as the sausage) and was President for
one term. Greg was then taken out by his Executive Vice-President, Andrea
Montoya. Montoya was taken out by the National union when the officers (most of
them) petitioned to have her dumped. Unlike President Reagan, Greg could not
follow a script! Quick to tell you his latest tale of woe, our man Greg
approaches the decision making process with the determination of a dairy cow
and the intellectual range of a toaster.
SUMMERELL REPORTS:
1/97
V.P. Greg Summerell reported on Lucent restructuring
the work units, consolidating departments and contracting.
2/97
E-Board member Greg Summerell advised that the
subcontracting is continuing.
3/97
V.P. Greg
Summerell reported on grievances involving subcontracting. He reported on the
restructuring of Lucent Technologies and the upcoming contract negotiations in
May of 1998.
4/97
V.P. Greg Summerell reported
on the meeting with the Vice-President of Lucent Technologies. There was a
question and answer session on the growth of union membership. The company says
one thing, but still continues subcontracting.
5/97
Vice President Summerell introduced the New Member
Packet to be mailed or hand delivered to new CWA members. The surplus Service
Reps. In AT&T are being taken back by Pacific Bell in Northern California.
Other options would be to report to other states. Still fighting with the
company on contracting.
6/97
Vice-President
Greg Summerell reported on his meeting with three primary officers of Lucent
which was very informative. Major changes will be made in the future, meaning
further downsizing. Still fighting the use of contractors. The company does not
want to hire regular employees. Many grievances sent to the top
level.
7/97
Vice-President Greg Summerell
reported that the company wanted to extend the contract. The company is
violating members rights - announced budget cuts and the next day they bought
Octel, the largest supplier of voice mail, for 1.8 Billion. They canceled all
training. Jobs are being given to temporary agency employees. The company is
ignoring previous agreements and hiring more temps and terms. The most
important issues to the employees of AT&T and Lucent were pension and
termination pay, in that order, according to the bargaining survey. Shows an
aging work force. M/S/C (Summerell 11-0) To rescind the October 14, 1980
Executive Board motion that states, "That all Officers including Executive
Board members, be offered the opportunity to attend all conferences, Council
Meetings, Conventions and any educational opportunities (not previously
attended) prior to extending the invitation to any other member."
[An explanation is in order: The original motion was
made, seconded and carried during my second term as Local President when I was
in the hospital. I believed then, as I do now, that the original motion was out
of order. It was made to prevent a Local President from arbitrarily selecting
participants to attend various union conferences, meetings, seminars or
educational experiences offered by the union. By rescinding the motion (notice
how he didn't use reconsider?) it will
allow the 'Queen of
Hearts' to do precisely what it was supposedly put in place to prevent!
There are no elected officers from the GT Unit scheduled to attend the
CWA District Conference]
8/97
Vice-President Greg Summerell announced that Lucent
entered an agreement with Litton. They have taken work back from a contractor.
Work being moved to Los Angeles and Tucson. There is a grievance going to the
National about contracting.
