Steele in Ireland
My Remington Steele Road Trip, May 2002
updated 9-30-200

Here I am on the Sky Road on our first day in Ireland. The road signs in this wild area of Connemara were written only in Gaelic.

A fellow Remington Steele fan and I had been planning to visit Ireland together ever since Laura and Remington honeymooned at Ashford Castle. Being a gutsy lady, Sandra decided she didn't mind driving on the wrong side of the road; that way, we could go where we wanted to go and stay as long as we wanted to stay. This was her first visit to Ireland and my third, but it was the first time I had seen the Emerald Isle from a rental car and had planned the itinerary myself.

Our number one priority was to spend a couple of nights in a deluxe, lake view room at Ashford Castle, so everything else was planned around that. I planned our route and AAA made arrangements for us through Brian Moore International. I printed directions from the Internet for each leg of our 10 day trip and we marked our route on a HUGE map of Ireland that would have rivaled the map Laura held in front of Remington as they raced through the halls on the motorized cart in search of Alessandra in "Bonds of Steele".

Then on Tues., May 7, 2002, we headed to the Atlanta International Airport. Thirteen hours later, we landed at the Shannon Airport in Ireland and caught the shuttle to the Avis car rental building. After checking out the pre-existing dings and bumps on our Toyota Avensis, we gingerly drove away and began our search for Remington Steele's Ireland.

There were two of us when we began our trip, but there were three of us when we returned to the U.S. In the charming little town of Clifden in the Connemara area, we both fell in love with a cute, little, long-haired, stuffed sheep that was as wild looking as Connemara itself. I was expecting my first great-niece in a little over a month, so I adopted the sheep for Baby Julia. I named her 'Moira' because she was born in ConneMARA.

Moira accompanied us throughout our trip. She traveled on the dashboard of the car and in my purse, my tote bag, my pockets, my rain jacket, and my arms. She saw castles, ruins, wild sheep, prehistoric tombs and ancient abbeys; she also saw the underside of the car and the floor of countless shops and restaurants. She made many new Irish friends and posed for pictures all over Ireland, and is currently in the process of writing a book about her adventures for her new best friend Baby Julia, who was born on June 14, 2002.
