Sõna is an infinitely expandable set of flashcards designed specifically for foreign language study. Sõna word lists can be created and shared across platforms.

Sõna provides

  • two testing modes (multiple choice or type word)
  • two review modes (review list or review cards)
  • score keeping
  • bidirectional quizzing (target language > English or English > target language)
  • optional sample sentences and sounds
  • support for most European languages.

Sõna was created by a Ph.D. candidate in Slavic linguistics who has taught Russian for several years, and studied Russian and other languages for almost twenty years. Sõna's design philosophy reflects this experience in two basic assumptions:

Context is critical for learning new vocabulary. Sõna lets you include examples of usage and even sound files, so you can see and hear the word in context.

Vocabulary should not be learned in a pedagogical vacuum. We encourage you to use Sõna to create word lists based on other materials that you’re using.

In addition, we plan to provide word lists keyed to major language textbooks, in order to provide the tightest possible integration with other study materials. If you would like to see word lists for Sõna keyed to a book you're using, please contact us. We will be happy to contact the publisher to see about an arrangement that helps you learn and respects their copyright.
