COMPARISON OF ACTUAL OBSERVATIONS WITH RESULTS OBTAINED FROM DIRE FOR MURRAH BUILDING AND KHOBAR TOWERS

Under contract with APT Research, Inc., EAI carried out an examination of the software package, Analysis of Death and Injuries Resulting from Explosions (DIRE), for providing personnel protection.  Test cases involving both the Murrah Building and the Khobar Towers were analyzed.  First, the validity of all DIRE inputs for these test cases were reviewed.  Next, the outputs of DIRE, including fatalities, major injuries, minor injuries, building damage, and glass breakage were compared with actual observations.  The results of the study suggest that, when used with accurate inputs, the DIRE software represents a valuable tool for predicting the damage to structures as well as the injuries/fatalities to personnel, resulting from a truck bomb explosion in the vicinity of a multi-story building.
