MAJOR RENOVATION OF CEMETERIES IN 1992
Thanks to the generous donations of several of our relatives, major progress was made in 1992 in restoration of both the Jacob Hunter Cemetery and the Allen Hunter Cemetery. The Jacob Hunter Cemetery was literally rescued from use as a cow pasture by the addition of a chain link fence, much brush removal, and the addition of a beautiful sign. A sign was designed by Nancy Osborn for the Allen Hunter Cemetery and was installed in November. Both cemeteries were mowed regularly throughout the year. Although much work remains in repairing and replacing markers, we now have the cemeteries in respectable condition. Pictures of the cemetery signs are shown on subsequent pages.
HUNTER SCRAPBOOK DISTRIBUTED
The scrapbook of family history compiled by Lettie and Lawrence Hunter has now been distributed to known descendants of Emmanuel Hunter as of last fall. We are indebted to Judge Robert Hunter of Quincy and his company Justice Publications for the printing and distribution of this historical document. If you have not received a copy of this work, please contact Judge Hunter @ Justice Publications, 529 Hampshire Street, Suite 609, Quincy, IL 62301 or you may contact the Jacob Hunter Trust at the address listed below. It is hoped that this work will stimulate others to share knowledge of our family history. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Trust.
1992 ANNUAL FINANCIAL REPORT
The 1992 report of income and expenditures is included with this issue of the Newsletter. We are very thankful for the generous donations from those contributing in 1992. Our goals are to establish a trust account of sufficient size to permit investing in Federal Treasury Notes so the interest can support perpetual care of our family cemeteries.
As noted in the report, our end of year balance grew substantially in 1992 even with the purchase of the two signs. In addition to building an interest bearing account, we plan to replace several gravestones that have been damaged over the years. With the continued interest and support of our relatives, we are very optimistic about the future of this Trust and the continued care for our cemeteries.
JACOB & ALLEN HUNTER TRUSTS MAY MERGE
Meetings have been held between the trustees of the Allen Hunter Cemetery Trust and the Jacob Hunter Trust with the intent of joining resources. Judge Robert Hunter Howerton, of Carterville is now assisting the Trusts with legal aspects of this merger. The Allen Hunter Trust has two C.D.s worth $8,000 that represented money paid to relatives from mineral rights on land surrounding the Allen Hunter Cemetery on the old Emmanuel Hunter homestead. This money was invested by Belva Hall many years ago. Belva had always intended to join the two cemeteries, and since the Jacob Hunter Cemetery group was formed, it has performed much work at the Allen Hunter Cemetery. If the trusts are joined this year, we intend to add $2,000 from the Jacob Hunter funds with the $8,000 in the Allen Hunter C.D.s to purchase our first Federal Treasury Note. This investment should return the trust over $600 per year in interest to be directed at cemetery maintenance.
The Jacob Hunter Trust already includes language necessary to provide for care and maintenance of the Allen Hunter Cemetery. Jacob Hunter, for whom the trust was named, was the grandfather of both Allen Hunter, namesake of the Allen H. Cemetery and Jacob Hunter, namesake for the Jacob H. Cemetery. Allen Hunter and Jacob Hunter, for whom the two cemeteries were named, were brothers. Their father, Emmanuel (Manuel) Hunter is buried at the Jacob Hunter Cemetery and their mother, Judith Lee Hunter, is believed buried at the Allen Hunter Cemetery. Therefore, all descendants from either Allen Hunter or Jacob Hunter (II) have at least one grandparent buried in each cemetery. The donors to the Jacob Hunter Cemetery have an equal interest in the and care of the Allen Hunter Cemetery and vice versa. Joining forces will permit better care for both cemeteries.
GIFTS AND BEQUESTS TO THE JACOB HUNTER TRUST
by Judge Robert S. Hunter Quincy, IL
Your gift or bequest can help to assure that the Jacob Hunter Cemetery and the Allen Hunter Cemetery in Williamson County Illinois can be restored and maintained for eternity. The easiest way to accomplish this is make gifts from time to time. You can do so by making checks payable to "Jacob Hunter Trust" where funds will be strictly controlled and used only for purposes that are consistent with the trust objectives.
You can remember the trust in your will. A simple bequest, as follows will suffice: "I give and bequeath to the Jacob Hunter Trust, a trust created to preserve the burial grounds of descendants of Jacob Hunter in Williamson County, Illinois, the sum of $(amount). "
Another simple way to make a gift to the Trust is known as the payable on death account (POD). You can open such an account at your bank or savings and loan. You open this kind of account by creating it is the name of "(Your name) Payable on Death to the Jacob Hunter Trust. " The Trustee is Richard H. Hunter, Route 3, Box 343, Marion, IL 62959.
There are numerous advantages to such an account: (1) you retain full control over it as long as you live, (2) you can increase or decrease the account or close it out without notifying anyone, (3) you are entitled to the income therefrom as long as you live, (4) it is entirely confidential. No one needs to know about it as long as you live.
The only difference between it and any other account you own is that, upon your death, the balance that is in the account at that time is paid to the Jacob Hunter Trust.
By contributing to the Jacob Hunter Trust, you will be strengthening our efforts to preserve family cemeteries, compile further historical information, and share information with interested relatives and selected public libraries. All contributors receive an annual accounting of all funds received and how all funds were spent.
WE WISH YOU A HAPPY, HEALTHY, PEACE-FILLED 1993

TO THE FRIENDS OF THE JACOB AND ALLEN HUNTER CEMETERIES:
We are very pleased to enclose the Jacob Hunter Trust Newsletter, together with the financial statement and the pictures of the two cemeteries.
These two cemeteries would have descended to oblivion by now had it not been for the tireless efforts of Lawrence and Lettie Hunter, Belva Hall, Dr. Richard H. Hunter, and others.
Those people have cleared and. restored both cemeteries, have placed fences around them and have adorned them with beautiful, permanent signs. In addition, they have compiled much information that is now a permanent treasure for future generations.
If you have not done so, won't you begin active participation in this fascinating project by:
1. Writing a check to the Trust;
2. Helping maintain either or both cemeteries, when called upon by Dr. Hunter or Lawrence Hunter;
3. Remembering the trust in your will, or in a payable on death account, with the Trust as beneficiary;
4. Stepping up your activities in accumulating historical and genealogical material that can be preserved in future Scrapbooks, like the one already furnished to you.
5. Letting Dr. Hunter or Lawrence and Lettie know if you have material of interest.
Very Truly Yours,
Robert S. Hunter
P. S. You can find out how your ancestors lived in Williamson County during the first years. Crossfire Press (Gordon Pruett, 916 No. 14th St., Herrin) has just issued "Growing Up With Southern Illlinois", the autobiography of frontiersman Danial Harmon Bush who founded Carbondale. You can get a copy (cloth cover) for $28.70 or paperback for $15.86 (tax and shipping included).
