James Dupuy, Captain of Infantry in the revolution; Heir of the famous old sword, which he bequeathed to his grandson; Very prominent citizen of Nottoway Co., Va., which hs represented in the State Legislature for twenty consecutive years; b. May 5, 1758; d. June 30, 1823; m. 1782, Mary Purnell, b. Mar 13, 1763; d. Feb. 15, 1828; (Daughter of William Purnell).


James Dupuy, (1758-1823), was captain of infantry in the Southern Department and was distinguished for bravery at Guilford Court House. His brothers John and Peter were also officers.

Died: At his residence in Nottoway County, on the 30th inst., JAMES DUPUY, ESQ., in the 66th year of his age - a man of sincere piety, stern integrity, and highly esteemed by his numerous acquaintence. He was for many years a regular member of the Baptist Church.

POPLAR GROVE, near the Ordinary, was the first Dupuy settlement in the
county. The Dupuys were of French Huguenot ancestry. Captain James Dupuy,
born May 5, 1753, and died June 30, 1823, was an officer of the
Revolutionary War. He married Mary Purnell, born March 13, 1763, and died
February 28, 1828. Poplar Grove was later a Fowlkes settlement. The old
Dupuy burying ground is located here.

Note: This James Dupuy is referred as "James Dupuy, Jr." until the death of his uncle who is often referred to as "James Dupuy, Sr." in 1811.

He was married to Mary Purnell (daughter of William Purnell and Ann) in 1782. Mary Purnell was born on 13 Mar 1758. She died on 15 Feb 1828 in Nottoway County, Virginia. She was buried in Dupuy Cemetery, Poplar Grove, Nottoway County, Virginia. James Dupuy Jr. and Mary Purnell had the following children:

(138) He appeared on the census in 1840 in Nottoway County, Virginia. (139) He appeared on the census on 4 Sep 1850 in Nottoway County, Virginia.(140) He died on 27 Dec 1851 in Nottoway County, Virginia. He was buried in Dupuy Cemetery, Poplar Grove, Nottoway County, Virginia.


According to the B. H. Dupuy Book, p. 189, lived near Burkeville, Nottoway County, Virginia. Never married.
