WILLIAM L. HUNTER
Funeral for William Lawrence Hunter, who died Thursday in a Gresham hospital
at age 86, will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Carroll Funeral Home, Gresham. Private
interment will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Mr. Hunter was born in Merkel, Texas. He farmed in the area before moving to
Fort Worth, Texas, where he became a carpenter. He moved to the Portland area
in 1942 and worked in home construction. He retired in 1962. In 1970 he move
to Gresham.
He was a member of Carpenter's Local 738.
He is survived by a daughter, Margaret Hicks of Gresham; a son, William "Jan"
Hunter of Portland; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was married to Mattie Lou Cargill (daughter of William
T. Cargill and Pearlee) on 9 May 1923 in Taylor County, Texas.

MRS. COATS SUCCUMBS AT MERKEL
MERKEL (RNS) -- Mrs. Roy Coats, 60, died at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday at her home here
after a short illness.
Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Merkel Methodist Church with the Rev.
Newton Daniel, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery with
Starbuck Funeral Home in charge.
She was born Mattie Lou Cargill, Sept. 4, 1906, in Milam County. She moved to
the Castle Peak area south of Merkel as a young girl with her parents and married
Roy Coats Dec. 23, 1947, in Abilene.
Survivors are the husband; one son, W. J. Hunter of Portland, Ore.; one daughter
Mrs. J. W. Wilkerson of Fort Worth; three brothers, Marvin Cargill of Muleshoe
and H. L. and W. T. Cargill, both of Abilene; three sisters, Mrs. Ida Daron of
Abilene, Mrs. Frances Baker of Amarillo and Mrs. Maudie Hogue of Corpus Christi;
one step-son, Roy R. Coats Jr. of Chino, Calif.; one step-daughter, Mrs. W. L.
Russell of Clifton, Ariz.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be J. C. Carson, Ray Wilson, Dave Gamble, W. B. Thomas, Johnny
Cox, and W. R. Cox.
William Laurence Hunter and Mattie Lou Cargill had the following children:
