Hampden-Sidney college, VA, 1879, Studied law under Prof. Minor of the University of Virginia; began practice of law in Franklin, Co., VA; moved to Roanoke, VA., 1888; Elected Judege of the 18th Judicial Circuit Court, Mar. 1892, and served until Jan. 1, 1901, when he resumed practice of Law in Parkersburg, W. VA.

He was married to Mary F. Vaughn (daughter of Rev. Clement Read Vaughn and Elvira A. Dennis) on 3 Dec 1885 in Rockbridge County, Virginia. Mary F. Vaughn was born in 1858 in Charlotte County, Virginia. She died on 9 Dec 1889. James Asa Dupuy and Mary F. Vaughn had the following children:
