Nancy
Lee DuPuy Fisk
MINERAL SPRINGS -- Mrs. Fisk died Monday, August 9, 2004 at her home. The family
has arranged for a memorial service to be held Friday, August 13 at 11 a.m. from
the First Presbyterian Church in Monroe. The entombment will follow the services
in the church columbarium.
Mrs. Fisk was born May 22, 1941 in Beckley, WV. For the last 27 years, she resided
in Mineral Springs, NC. She was educated at Agnes Scott College and transferred
to UNC-Chapel Hill where she received a B.A. in Secondary Education. Later, she
received an M.A. from Emory University in Early Modern British History. Her first
teaching experience was in Gainesville, FL. Perhaps the most challenging teaching
came from 2 years in the Peace Corps in Belize, British Honduras, a Third World
Nation at that time. In 1976, the Fisks moved to Union County (NC) where Nancy
served at the elementary, middle and high school levels for over 20 years. She
was named Teacher of the Year on three occasions at East Elementary, Monroe Middle
and Monroe High schools. Of these, she cherished the high school one the most
because it was awarded by her peers.
Nancy was a lifelong Presbyterian and spent the last 24 years at First Presbyterian
in Monroe. Although she considered herself an observant Christian it wasn't until
her bout with ALS that she realized the true meaning of commitment to Christ
and the church. The Bible and the preacher's words also strengthened her faith.
The many offerings of food, flowers, and visits from everyone made her aware
of the love on which she could survive.
Mrs. Fisk had a passion for travel, reading and needlework. The trips that she
considered an educational adventure included most of Central America, Colombia
and Peru. Besides trips to Europe, the most unusual and enjoyable were Japan
and Alaska. Reading books was a lifetime pleasure. Her history background from
college led her to read biographies and worldwide histories. She always enjoyed
novels, especially mysteries, forensic stories, and summer at the beach love
stories. Additionally, she enjoyed needlework, crewel and petit point. Both the
house and the vacation cabin are filled with her pieces.
Another source of pleasure was the outdoors. Having grown up in the coal mining
mountains of West Virginia, her first 17 years were spent exploring the woods
for insects, small mammals and the occasional big cats. She even enjoyed mowing
grass for the sounds, sights, scents and freedom that nature provides. In recent
years, a sit in the sun with flowers blooming, grass growing and a light breeze
gently moving about made her even more grateful for nature at its finest.
Nancy loved to read for it provided the greatest escape from the world's mundane
chores. As the disease of ALS progressed, her greatest loss was the ability to
read.
During their marriage, Nancy and Jim built 2 houses from the ground up. The first
house was a family project with Nancy serving as a gofer. After this house was
finished, Nancy was familiar with the use of many tools. By the time a second
house was started, a log house in Mineral Springs, she had become a knowledgeable
construction foreman.
She was preceded in death by her father, Dr. Samuel Stuart DuPuy, Sr. and her
mother, Helen Elizabeth Baker DuPuy. She is survived by her husband, James
Edward Fisk; a daughter, Andrea Fisk-Svoboda and son-in-law, Jerry and granddaughter,
Veronica, all of Chicago, IL; step sons, Eric Fisk, Scott Fisk (Lisa )and Tim
Fisk (Jeannie) and 6 step grandchildren, Alyssa, Evan and Emily Fisk and Sarah,

and Laura DuPuy; and John DuPuy (Susannah) and great nephew, Jack; and J.D. DuPuy
(Cherie) and great niece, Cate.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 302 East
Windsor Street, Monroe, NC 28112, or to the ALS Center, P.O. Box 32861, Charlotte,
NC 28232-2861.
