Not much is known about the life of James Dupuy, Sr. He was the youngest of the sons of Peter Dupuy and Judith Lefevre, and was probably born about 1738.

In 1777, his father Peter left him "half the Tract of Land which I am now possessed with, I desire he may have it at the lower end joining the lands of Abraham Forest and Josiah Hundley", probably in Amelia County, VA.

No Revolutionary War service is attributed to James Dupuy, although it is likely he servied in some capacity.

He married in 1783, and lived in Amelia County and later Nottoway County, unil he died in 1811. After the settlement of his estate in 1813, his wife Prudence moved to Limestone County, Alabama, with sons James and Edmund, where she died in 1822.
