A letter from David Dupuy to his mother:
D. L. DUPUY
General Agent for
The H. P. Carver Hardware Manufacturing Company
Comanche, Texas Dec. the 15 1898
Mrs. L. J. Dupuy, Battle
Dear Mama:
As I am at home today and it is raining two hard to be out at business will say
a few words to you thinking that you might like to hear from us.
I have no news of interest that you have not already heard but I have been for
some time trying to catch a time to write you but have ben so busy and most all
the time away from home in the iron business have ben but little at home since
I returned from the trip down there with you except when I have ben held here
by the sickness in our family.
I have ben three trips to Hamilton two trips I did fine business the last trip
I had bad cold weather and was sick three or four days and did very little business
thoug I was out about 10 days.
I was at old sister Clark's at Shive. She inquired very specially after you.
Sends her kindest regards to you also Bro. & Sister Denison sends there
regards to you and said they would like so much to meet you on this side the
river again. I sold them an iron and ate dinner with them.
Well Ma Netty has been suffering verry much with her teath and head and has had
a very sevier cough seems almost enough to kill her. Throug the night our little
Goodman has been sick & I think mostly with his teath. He is some better
today thoug he is better of a day than at night. He is just now walking rite
good and is growing smart very fast.
Fred, Effie, Laurence and Della are in school and getting along fine and anxious
to go all the time.
Well we have been trying to sell out here but if we don't sell before xmas we
will not try to move untill the school is out in the summer.
I went up to Stephens Co. saw some fine country up there and found some cheap
land both improved and unimproved.
Jessie and Steave have moved up there and we have had but one letter from her
since they moved. They got throug alrite but had not got into there house when
she wrote
Well Ma I was veryy glad to hear through Lula's letter to Ed that you are getting
better. Hope you will continue until you get to feeling right again.
Well Ma I was verry much surprised to hear of the premature deth of our dear
boy. I know that news spread such gloom and sadness in our homes. He was so
promising and full of hope and energy. I was so glad that it was my privilege
to see him and be with him while I was down there. I had a long talk with him
in Dr. Foster's office we talked of his prospects his hardships, difficulties
and disappointments that met him at almost every turn. I recommended faith,
prayer, and trust in his mother's God which he said was his fondest hopes and
highest aspirations. I was glad to know that he enjoyed these graces and the
more so as he was so suddenly taken from us.
Well Ma I tried to be lively and cheerful and to make my short stay with my loved
ones as much a benediction to all as was possible for me to do and I was glad
to be there and enjoy it verry verry much yet all the time my hart was heavy
a burden was on my hart. Which all the love and joy and kindness and happy reception
of all the kind loved ones whom I met could not remove.
I don't often realise such gloom and somehow felt that such was childish. But
we are glad of the tender emotions and gratifying influences wrought only upon
our hart and life by the Christian religion.
Well I will close for this time with love to all and a hole heap to you.
As ever your son,
D. L. Dupuy.
