HASKELL DARROW GLENN
This biography was written by Mrs. Wanda Conley of California <CCONLEY@bak.rr.com>,
a George Glenn descendant:
Haskell Darrow Glenn, son of George Alonzo and Cora Catherine (Pyle) Glenn, was
born 23 July 1908, at Eros, Marion Co., Ark. The family was living in Elmore
City, Okla. when George Alonzo was called back to Arkansas to help his brother,
Marshall Delmer, with their father, George A. Glenn Sr., who was i11 at the time.
While the family was in Arkansas, Haskell was born. Later after George Sr. was
better the family came back to Oklahoma. They had moved to Oklahoma in the late
1890's and lived near Haskell's grandparents, Nathan and Hannah Pyle.
Haskell was visiting his aunt Rosa (Pyle) Malicoat at Roff, Okla. when he met
Jessye Buchanan, whose family also lived at Roff, Okla. After their marriage
they lived with Jessye's mother and cared for her in her last illness, except
for a few months right after their marriage they lived on the Red River on the
Texas/Okla. State line. In 1937, after the doctor advised them to take their
daughter, Wanda, to a warmer climate, Haskell went to Arizona, near Chandler
to find work. Jessye and Cora followed with son, George Alton and daughter Wanda.
A neighbor was driving through to Arizona and they had the back seat for the
four of them, including their suitcases. Before they left Roff, Jessye had made
up her beds, put away their dishes etc. just as if they would be back the next
day. It was 20 years before Jessye returned to visit her home in Roff, Okla.
George Absolom came to Arizona in the fall of 1937 and he and Haskell worked
on a dairy farm and other farms in the area. Shortly after the beginning of World
War Two the family came to Calif. George Absolom and Cora came in one car and
had Billy Glenn, one of Haskell and Jessye's twins with them. Haskell and Jessye
brought George Alton, Wanda and Wilda, the twin to Billy. The twins were small
babies at the time. They came to Wasco, Calif., where they had cousins on the
Pyle side of the family. Anna (Glenn) Jones had gone to Long Beach, Calif. to
work in the shipyards. They lived in Wasco, Calif. for about a year before Haskell
got a job on a drilling rig, and moved to Coalinga, Calif., where they rented
a house on Pleasant Street. Cora and George Absolom lived on the same street
about a block away. In 1943 Haskell got a job with Standard Oil of California,
and was with them until his retirement in 1970.
In 1945 Haskell moved his family to Wartham Canyon, about 7 miles west of Coalinga,
and lived there until 1952. They then moved back to Coalinga. Their four children
attended schools in Coalinga, and graduated from Coalinga Union High School.
After his retirement, Haskell and Jessye decided to sell their home in Coalinga
and move to Taft, Calif., where their daughter, Wanda lived. It was here that
they both passed away. Jessye passed away 4 June 1974 and Haskell 19 Aug. 1979.
Both are buried at Westside Dist. Cemetery, Taft, Calif.
He was married to Jessye Mae Buchanan (daughter of Saborn
Davis Buchanan and Elizabeth Ann Craig) on 2 Jan 1932 in
Pauls Valley, Garvin County, Oklahoma. Jessye Mae Buchanan
was born on 15 Feb 1905 in Oklahoma. She died on 4 Jun 1974 in Taft, Kern County,
California.(133) She was buried in Westside
Dist. Cemetery, Taft, California. Haskell Darrow Glenn and Jessye Mae Buchanan
had the following children:
George Alton Glenn.
Wanda Jo Glenn.
Billy Van Glenn.
Wilda Ann Glenn (Private).
