Dempsey was a revolutionary soldier according to his widow who filed a
pension application in 1843. [Note: see "pension.hunter.dempsey.html"]. He
was at the battle of King's Mountain (1780), the siege of Augusta, battles of
Goose Hatch and Julia Jim where Colonel Lawrence was wounded, and several
Indian skirmishes.
First record of Dempsey Hunter is on the 1790 census of Richland County,
South Carolina, with 1 male over 16, 2 under 16, 3 females, and no slaves.
He is a witness for the will of Jacob Faust,
which is dated October 17, 1793, Richland County, SC.
Dempsey is mentioned in the History of Richland County, SC, as being made
captain of the militia August 8, 1794, at Crane Creek for the district
between Columbia and Fairfield.
He is mentioned as a "beloved friend" along with Allen Hunter in
the will of William Faust dated July
13, 1796, in Richland County, SC. He and Allen are also executors. Elizabeth
Hunter, probably the wife of Allen, is the primary beneficiary of the will,
receiving 100 acres of Faust's land and a horse. The other beneficiary is
Williams's wife, Mary.
In the pension application of Katherine Hunter, 1843, she says that she and
Dempsey moved to Tennessee in 1801; History of Montgomery/Robinson Counties
says he settled near Pleasant View in what is now Cheatam County, TN.
Dempsey is listed on the 1820 Census of Montgomery County, TN next to Allen
Hunter and son Dempsey Hunter: He is also very close to Matthew Ryburn, whom
Matthew Ryburn Hunter, a son of Jacob Hunter, is named for:

Additionally, Dempsey's son Dempsey is listed as a nephew of Allen Hunter
(see will filed 1820, Montgomery County, Tennessee, "will.hunter.allen.html"), making
Dempsey a brother of Allen.. Jacob Hunter, son of Emanuel Hunter, is also
listed as a nephew of Allen, and derivatively this makes Dempsey also a
brother of Jacob Hunter. Dempsey's son John T. Hunter and other sons are
listed as nephews of David Hunter (1775-1861, who died in Davidson County,
Tennessee), making David also a brother of Dempsey.
