31. John Barber Martin
was born on 22 Oct 1805 in Lincoln County, North Carolina. He appeared
on the census on 13 Nov 1850 in Marshall County, Tennessee.
(66) He appeared on the census on 25 Jul 1860 in Jasper Township,
Jasper County, Missouri.(67) He died
on 19 Dec 1861 in Carthage, Jasper County, Missouri.
From the McConnell Book, Page 96:
John B. Martin and his brother Vincent B. Martin emigrated from Marshall County,
Tenn., in the year 1855, to Jasper County, Mo. They bought and settled upon
adjoining farms. These farms were situated near Carthage, the county seat. John
B. Martin soon became justice of the peace and deputy postmaster. James Harvey
Martin entered the Confederate Army in 1861, and was desperately wounded at the
battle of Jenkin's Ferry, in the State of Arkansas, in a battle between the army
of General Steele and the army of General Sterling Price. James Harvey's hip
was broken and he lay in a hospital until March, 1865. The action at Jenkin's
Ferry occurred on April 30, 1864. When he left the hospital he was destitute;
a friend furnished him some money, and, he made his way to Texas, not knowing
at that time what had become of tile families of his father and of his uncle,
Vincent B. His father, John B. Martin, died December 19, 1861.
He was married to Margaret Shields (daughter of Mr. Shields)
on 2 Nov 1830. Margaret Shields was born on 30 Nov
1801. She died on 5 Oct 1839 in Marshall County, Tennessee. John Barber Martin
and Margaret Shields had the following children:

Tennessee. She died on 26 Aug 1854 in Marshall County, Tennessee.

Esther Lamyra Shields (daughter of Mr. Shields) about 1840.
Esther Lamyra Shields was born on 11 Mar 1804. She died on 7 Feb
1847 in Marshall County, Tennessee. John Barber Martin and Esther Lamyra Shields
had the following children:

to Flavia R. Miller (daughter of Mr. Miller) on 20 Feb 1850
in Marshall County, Tennessee.(68)
Flavia R. Miller was born on 7 Jul 1812 in Tennessee. She died
on 8 Jun 1886 in Lamar County, Texas. She was buried in Shady Grove Cemetery,
Lamar County, Texas.

Notes: Tombstone is inscribed, 'Wife of J.B. Martin.' Found in the Daughters
of the American Revolution Cemetery Collection compiled in 1940, parts of which
were donated by the Joseph Ligon Chapter of Paris & copied by Sallie Lee
Lightfoot of Paris. The book was located in the Corsicana Genealogical Library,
Corsicana, TX., & copied by Betsy Mills & Elizabeth House. Marker was
found in a pile of stones.
