Beard was born on 6 Mar 1886 in Austin, Travis County, Texas.⁽³⁶⁾ He appeared on the census in 1910 in 435 Cooper St., 9th Ward, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas.⁽⁵⁴⁶⁾ He appeared on the census on 20 Apr 1910 in 4005 Guadalupe, JP #3, 4th Ward, Austin, Travis County, Texas.⁽⁵⁴⁷⁾ He appeared on the census on 4 Jan 1920 in 1017 Orange St., 10th Ward, Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas.⁽⁵⁴⁸⁾ He appeared on the census on 3 Apr 1930 in Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida. ⁽⁵⁴⁹⁾ He died on 7 Jul 1960 in Bryan, Brazos County, Texas. ⁽⁵⁵⁰⁾ He was buried on 9 Jul 1960 in Austin Memorial Park, Travis County, Texas.⁽⁵⁵¹⁾

They lived for a short time in the 1920's in Florida and Atlanta, Georgia, returning to Fort Worth in 1931.

Dick Beard worked as a District Manager for the Waters-Pierce Oil Company and later as a District Manager for the Sinclair Oil Company. Mrs. Beard was a graduate of the University of Texas in 1906, and majored in Greek and Latin. She taught school for one year before she married. Mr. Beard died at his oldest son's house in Bryan, Texas.

The Encylopedia of Texas, p. 398, has this article on "D. W. Beard":

D. W. Beard, North Texas Manager for the Pierce Oil Corporation, W. T. Waggoner Building, came to Fort Worth from San Antonio in 1913 in the capacity of assistant manager of the sales department and in 1919 was promoted to his present position. He has been with the Pierce organization since he was seventeen years of age, starting in the sales department and remaining there continuously.

The territory under the direct management of Mr. Beard consists of about one hundred North Texas counties and the department under his control numbers approximately two hundred people in the organization. Gasoline, kerosene and other refined oil products are supplied to the trade in this territory from the large refinery of the Pierce Oil Corporation in fort Worth.

A native Texan, Mr. Beard was born at Austin, March 6, 1886. His father was J. W. Beard, also a native Texan and for many years a well known stock farmer and stockman of Austin. His mother was formerly Miss Mary J. Glenn, member of a well known Texas family.

After attending the Austin public schools, young Beard decided to enter the commercial world and selected the sales department of the Waters-Pierce Oil Company as the scene of his first efforts. His success in his chosen efforts is best attested by the fact that he has remained with the same company continuously for sixteen years. When the company was reorganized as the Pierce Oil Corporation, he continued with them.

He was first stationed at Austin and later at San Antonio and in 1913 came to Fort Worth. He is an ernest and sincere booster for Fort Worth and believes that with its splendid transportation facilities it is the logical center of the oil industry in Texas. Mr. Beard also declares that now the oil fever incident to the discovery of the justlyfamous West Texas fields, is settling down and that from now on the industry will be a practical, honest business and not so fraught with speculative features as it has been in the past.

On October 1, 1907, Mr. Beard was married at Austin to Miss Elsie Rutledge, a native Texas and daughter of J. W. Rutledge, well known businessman at Austin. They have four children, Blanton, Elizabeth, Winifred and Dick W., Jr.

DEATHS AND FUNERALS


DICK W. BEARD

Dick W. Beard, 74, died Thursday in Bryan at the home of his son, Jim B. Beard. Born in Austin March 6, 1886, he was a retired district manager of Sinclair Oil Company. He formerly resided in Houston.

Other survivors are two daughters, Mrs. A. L. Sullivan and Miss Helen Beard, both of Fort Worth; a sister, Mrs. Merton Parrish, La Coste; five brothers, C. G. Beard and C. R. Beard, both of Austin; C. W. Beard, Fort Worth, T. A. Beard, Alpine and A. J. Beard, San Antonio; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at Weed-Corley Funeral Home Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Tom Beard, John Beard, George Beard, Bobby Beard, Bill Beard, and Norman Beard, all nephews.

He was married to Elsie Mary Rutledge (daughter of John Walker Rutledge and Julia Elizabeth Anderson) on 1 Oct 1907 in Austin, Travis County, Texas.⁽⁵⁵²⁾ Elsie Mary Rutledge was born on 6 Nov 1885 in Austin, Travis County, Texas. She died on 27 Feb 1936 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas.⁽⁵⁵³⁾ She was buried on 1 Mar 1936 in Austin Memorial Park, Travis County, Texas. ⁽⁵⁵⁴⁾

Funeral services for Mrs. Elsie M. Beard, wife of Dick W. Beard, who died at her home in Fort Worth early Thursday morning, were held at the Thurlow Weed Funeral Home at 3 p.m. Friday.

The Rev. E. H. Lightfoot of Cleburne was assisted by the Rev. C. W. Hall in conducting the service. Pallbearers were Robert Hunter of Fort Worth, E. Kirby of Houston, E. G. Haubold, Jack Crumpley, John Hetchelbech, and G. W. Reese, all of Fort Worth. William DeWitt "Dick W." Beard and Elsie Mary Rutledge had the following children:
