MRS. MARY JANE G. BEARD

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Jane Glenn Beard, 88, were conducted at the Weed-Corley Funeral Home Friday with the Rev. Ted Richardson officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jim Beard, John Beard, Bill Beard, Frank Beard, Norman Beard and George Beard, all grandsons of the deceased.

She was married to James Willis Beard (son of Alexander Beard and Mary Ann Curott) on 1 Jan 1882 in Travis County, Texas.^{(203) (36)} James Willis Beard was born on 10 Feb 1855 in Station Creek, Coryell County, Texas. ⁽³⁶⁾ He bought 320 acres of the Wm. L. Swaim tract for $100 gold, $200 promissary note on 8 Dec 1883 in Travis County, Texas. ⁽²⁰⁴⁾ He appeared on the census on 7 Jun 1900 in State Street, 3rd Ward, JP No. 3, Austin, Travis County, Texas.⁽²⁰⁵⁾ He appeared on the census on 23 Apr 1910 in 1307 State Street, 4th Ward, JP No. 3, Austin, Travis County, Texas.⁽²⁰⁶⁾ He appeared on the census on 15 Jan 1920 in 1400 State Street, 4th Ward, Austin, Travis County, Texas.⁽²⁰⁷⁾ He died on 21 Jun 1920 in Austin, Travis County, Texas. ⁽²⁰⁸⁾ He was buried on 22 Jun 1921 in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin, Travis County, Texas.⁽²⁰⁹⁾

Mr. Beard worked on a raft on the Colorado River, hauling railroad ties from upstream during the building of the railroads into Austin in 1870. He worked at other jobs until buying land on West Bull Creek in 1883, which he farmed and chopped cedar. He also had a residence on State Street and 34th in Austin. He died of stomach cancer. He was a member of the Methodist church.

Mrs. Beard kept the family place until the 1930's when she sold it to her grandson, Jim "Blanton" Beard. He has kept a portion of the property in the family until this day.

IN MEMORIAM

Mr. J. W. Beard, who departed this life on Monday, June 21, 1920, was born in Coryell County, Texas, in 1855, moved to Travis County in 1869, and married Mary J. Glenn in 1882.

To them were born 11 children. Mrs. Beard and eight of the children survive him.

They have raised their children to man and womanhood to be honest, useful, industrious and trustworthy. They are all citizens of the best type.

Mr. Beard was the embodiment of those principles and characteristics that go into the makeup of a Christian gentleman.

He had been a member of the Methodist Church for about 40 years.

His relations with his fellow-man won for him their confidence, love, and esteem, and he will ever be remembered by those who knew him as one of Travis County's best citizens.

GOLDEN WEDDINGS RUN IN THE FAMILY

Not every bride and groom that walks that long aisle has an opportunity to celebrate those golden memories at their 50th wedding anniversary. With four brothers and a sister from the Beard family attaining that plateau and gathering from around Texas for a golden anniversary reunion -- that's one for Ripley.

The setting for the reunion couldn't have been more appropriate -- the ranch home of the Granville Smiths on Scenic Loop in the hill country. The pioneer home and mighty sprawling oaks added to the air of permanence and loosed a flood of memories of yesterdays for the couples.

Parents

The four Beard brothers and their sister are descendants of Mr. and Mrs. James W. Beard who farmed out of Austin when the family was growing up.

Thomas A. Beard and the former Mabel Koehl have worn their wedding bands the longest. They married in Corpus Christi on Jan. 18, 1916 and will celebrate their 60th anniversary next year. They have one son, J. Norman Beard of Alpine, and one daughter, Mrs. Granville Smith of San Juan. The Torn Beards lived in Corpus Christi unti1 1920 and now live in Alpine. He was a distributor for Standard Oil Company for many years.

Andrew J. Beard and Elizabeth Sipple married on Oct. 22, 1919, in San Antonio, and live here still. Their one son, John, also lives in San Antonio. Due to illness, the Andrew Beards were unable to attend the overnight reunion at the ranch. They have been in the laundry and rental business.

Laura May Beard married Murton C. Parrish in Austin on Feb. 28, 1921. They have two daughters, Mrs. A. C. Heath of La Coste and Mrs. A. D. Dockery. The daughters also attended the get-together. Parrish, after 31 years with the San Antonio Public Service, moved to LaCoste where he worked with the Medina Valley School District -- retiring recently.

Carl G. Beard and Inez .Helton were wed Sept. 20, 1922, in Austin and have two sons, George and. Bobby Beard, living in Austin. After Carl's retirement as a printer from The Steck Company in Austin, the family moved to Round Rock where they now live.

Officer

Claud W. Beard married Jimmie Lee West on Dec. 20, 1924 in Ft. Worth, where they've lived for over 50 years. They have one son, Bill, who lives in Ft. Worth. Claud has 30 years service with Gulf Oil Company to his credit and is now a customs officer in Ft. Worth.

Claud has a twin brother, Clyde, who still has about eight years to go until his golden anniversary.

The group was leaving, after spending a couple of days catching up on family talk, for the Beard family reunion in Bryan at the James B. Beard home. About 50 family members will gather.

Each Thanksgiving the Beard men, about 26 strong, all head for the old Beard homestead at Bull Run for a hunters' holiday. No women are allowed -- the men "fix the vittles" and bring in the game.

The Beard boys are a lot alike -- strong-principled family men but with a passion for teasing. Those twinkles in their eyes save a reporter from believing everything they say.

They have their own beliefs as to why their marriages survived. One said, "You just have to pick out the right girl and stick with her."

Another. brother commented, "They always said the Beard boys were choosy when it came to girls and I guess it pays."

The wives agree that their husbands received high ideals from their parents and had strong characters to build their marriages on. No marriage is all smooth going -- but patience and fortitude help smooth out the rough spots.

The nicest thought was the one, "If we had it all to do over, we'd have picked the same sweethearts and lived our lives over just the same."
