parent's home in Austin and have celebrated 72 Christmases together. Residents
of Care Inn West, they plan to spend this Christmas in the home of their daughter,
Mrs. Virgil Miller. Mrs. Glenn crocheted the afghan covering her husband's legs.
72 Christmases
"We always had a Christmas tree," says Mrs. F. J. Glenn. "My mother
made the decorations for me. You wouldn't believe what she could cut out and
make little dolls and things. And we used apples to decorate the tree. "
Mr. and Mrs. Glenn, residents of Care Inn West, have celebrated 72 Christmases
together. They were married in Austin on Nov. 13, 1904.
"You people today don't know it, but we didn't used to have electricity,"
teases Mrs. Glenn. She can remember lighting Christmas trees with candles and
she remembers catching a tree on fire.
Asked how they spent their first married Christmas, Mrs. Glenn laughs, "I
remember the day after our wedding better. I was expecting a big time but he
had to go pick up a load of feed. I followed his wagon in the buggy."
She smiles at the happy memory. "His mother did fix us a big dinner, though."
Mrs. Glenn is 92 years old and her husband is 95. They moved to Victoria in June
to be near their daughters Mrs. Henry Sassman and Mrs. Virgil Miller. The couple's
other children are R. A. Glenn of Houston and Mrs. Lora Thurman and Mrs. Treva
Brewington, both of Austin.
"We always fixed Christmas for the children," she remembers, "That
was our big time. I got up real early before anyone else and baked my bread and
the turkey. The turkey never did taste as good to me if it stood for a day."
The Glenns also have eight grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and two great
great grandchildren.
Last Christmas was a happy one for the couple because a grandson came from Boston
to be with them. This
year, they to spend the day in Mrs. Miller's home and are looking forward to
visiting with a granddaughter from California.
When asked what she would like for Christmas, Mrs. Glenn suggests a "pretty
little pin" to wear on her dress. But she admits that being with as many
members of her family as possible is what means most to her during the holidays
