From the Elgin, Texas, Newspaper, August 25, 1938:
MRS. MARY IDA NELSON PASSES ON FOLLOWING EXTENDED ILLNESS
Mrs. Mary Ida Nelson, wife of A. G. Nelson, passed on at 11:45 o'clock Tuesday
night, August 23rd, 1938, at the family home near Elgin, following an extended
illness. Mrs. Nelson had been in failing health some two and a half years but
had been an up and down patient until the past several months when she was bedfast.
Her death was attributed to the effects of paralysis.
Funeral services were held today, Thursday, August 25, at 2:00 p.m. from Elgin
Methodist Church with the Rev. A. A. Carter, Methodist pastor, officiating.
Favorite hymns were sung by the choir with Mrs. J. B. Posey playing the accompaniment;
the processional and recessional.
Interment was in Elgin cemetery.
Mrs. Nelson, the daughter Hosea and Mary Ann Johns, was born September 21, 1869,
in Travis county, Texas, near Austin, where she was reared and in May,1898, was
married to Mr. A. G. Nelson. They established their home in Bastrop County,
near Elgin, where Mr. Nelson has engaged in farming and both made scores of friends.
They had no children of their own but lavished the love of parents on a nephew
who made his home with them and in turn revered them and will mourn her going
as the loss of an own mother. When illness laid Mrs. Nelson low this fine young
man left a position in Chicago, where he had been for many years, and came "home"
to attend her bedside. His attentions and faithfulness to her have been so devotedly
and cheerfully given they have been an inspiration to friends who have gone into
the home to lend a helping hand.
Mrs. Nelson was of the Elgin Methodist church and a Christian who bore her cross
bravely and patiently. She was appreciative of the visits and kindly assistance
rendered her by members of the Methodist Missionary Society who were her leaning
staff in her last months, giving her courage and faith.
Surviving other than the husband are two brothers, G. W. Johns, Georgetown, Texas
and W. H. Johns, Duncan, Oklahoma and one nephew, Forrest Warren, of Elgin.
