ALPINE — James Norman Beard, 86, of Alpine, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at his home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Floyd-Harp officiating. Arrangements by Geeslin Funeral Home.
He was born in Corpus Christi. He was a 58-year resident of Alpine. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was Methodist.

SURVIVORS: Wife, Ruth Beard of Alpine; son, James David Beard of Bracketville; and sister, Barbara Beard Smith of San Juan.

Alpine has lost one of its long-time citizens and civic servants, James Norman Beard. He passed away Dec. 30 at his residence.

Norman was born Jan. 15, 1917, in Corpus Christi to Mabel and T.A. Beard. His family moved to Alpine in January 1920 and as a three-year-old, he began his association with the First United Methodist Church by enrolling in The Cradle Roll.

Norman graduated from Alpine High School and Sul Ross State University. In 1940, he married Ruth Ross, who became a public school teacher for many years. They have one son, James David, who lives in Bracketville.

They lived in El Paso before Norman joined and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. After his military service, he was a wholesaler for Standard Oil Co. in Marfa for nine years before holding the same position in Alpine until his retirement in 1980.

Throughout his life, Norman serviced his church in many capacities. He was active on various boards and committees, supported the Wesley Foundation at Sul Ross, and was financial secretary for many years.

He also served Alpine in many ways. He was on the city council and the Brewster County Hospital Board. The Wesley Center, the Alpine Public Library and the Alpine Community Center were very important to him. He was a long-time member and former president of the Alpine Lions Club.

Norman's friends will remember his sharp wit, twinkling eyes and keen intelligence.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; his son, Jim; a sister, Barbara Beard Smith and her husband Granville Smith, of San Juan, Texas; and a sister-in-law, Grace Rose, of Uvalde, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Services were conducted by Rev. David Floyd-Harp at First United Methodist Church in Alpine on Saturday, Jan. 3. Memorials may be given to a favorite charity or to the Alpine First United Methodist Church Endowment Fund.

He was married to Wilma Ruth Rose (daughter of George Rose and Nettie Mae Salmon) on 5 Jun 1940 in El Paso, El Paso County, Texas. Wilma Ruth Rose was born on 17 Dec 1919 in Brackettville, Kinney County, Texas. She died on 15 Sep 2005 in Alpine, Brewster County, Texas. She was buried in Elm Grove Cemetery, Brewster County, Texas.

ALPINE Ruth Beard, 85, of Alpine, a retired school teacher, died Thursday, Sept. 15, 2005, at her home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery. Arrangements are by Geeslin Funeral Home.

She was born in Brackettville.

SURVIVORS Son, James Beard of Brackettville; and sister, Grace Ailene Rose of Uvalde.
