John and Julia were married at the home of Justice of the Peace James A. Wright,
Esq., of Duval Station. They built their home at 4005 Guadalupe Street in 1894,
where they lived the rest of their lives. The original house burned about 1919,
and was rebuilt by Mr. Rutledge. The house still stands and is used as an office
building. It is called the John Rutledge building.
John Rutledge worked in various businesses in Austin, mostly real estate and
contracting. There are many deeds recorded in his name. Deed filed August 15,
1883 (57-91), Wilson Woody et. al. to JWR. Deed filed January 8, 1889 (85-425),
Thomas Anderson to John W. Rutledge. Deed filed September 8, 1890 (97-110),
to F. M. Stobaugh to JWR. Deed filed September 19, 1890 (96-246), JWR to J.
B. Hunter (his brother-in-law). Deed filed July 21, 1892 (104-324), JWR to C.
Peery & wife.
His skills in contracting were shown in the layout of the streets in Hyde Park.
According to J. B. Beard, and Mildred Rutledge Clark, he laid these streets out
by eye, and when they were re-surveyed some years later, the streets were found
to be laid out perfectly. He had little formal education.
He was once in partnership with his brother-in-law, Abe Anderson (about 1910),
and his daughter's father-in-law, James W. Beard (about 1907). With Beard he
owned a large tract of land west of Balcones Road stradling FM 2222. Beard and
Rutledge sold the land after stripping it of its wood. He was reputed to have
made many land deals in west Texas with his brother, W. P. "Pink" Rutledge.
In later years the Rutledges took in boarders as John Rutledge's health declined.
Their house was always a center of activity between the boarders and visiting
family. The Rutledges were members of the Shettles Memorial Methodist Church
in Austin. Mrs. Rutledge was a daughter of Thomas Anderrson who built the Anderson
Mill. She attended college in Austin in the 1870's.
