4. Samuel J. Rutledge was born in 1785 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. He appeared on the census in 1830 in Maury County, Tennessee.⁽¹⁹⁾ He appeared on the census in 1840 in Maury County, Tennessee. ⁽²⁰⁾ He bought 80 acres in name of William Goforth from Jacob A. Keaton for $5 on 25 Oct 1848 in Wayne County, Tennessee. ⁽²¹⁾ He received a Tennessee Land Grant in 1850. ⁽²²⁾ He appeared on the census on 8 Oct 1850 in District #3, Wayne County, Tennessee.⁽²³⁾ He died in Aug 1855 in Waynesboro, Wayne County, Tennessee.

He was married to Bethia Carter (daughter of John Carter) on 26 Dec 1823 in Maury County, Tennessee. Bethia Carter was born in 1809 in North Carolina. She died in Jan 1860 in Waynesboro, Wayne County, Tennessee. Samuel J. Rutledge and Bethia Carter had the following children:
