ATTORNEY T. F. HOUGHTON DIES OF DIABETIS
End Came for Prominent Attorney and Business Man Here Last Friday Morning
Judge T. F. Houghton, a resident of Floydada since 1901, and one of the leading
members of the South Plains bar, died at his home in Floydada last Friday morning
at 7:30, after being confined to his bed for only two days. He had been in poor
health for more than two years, however.
The funeral services were held at the Houghton home on South Main Street Saturday
afternoon at three o'clock and interment was made in Floydada Cemetery at four.
The fu-neral services were conducted by Rev. G. I. Britain, now of Plainview,
for a number of years a resident of Floydada, and a close friend of the deceased.
A large-crowd of friends of thefamily, both in and out-of-town friends, were
present at the funeral service, and were in the cortege to the cemetery. The
banks of the city were closed from three to four in the afternoon honoring the
deceased.
Judge Houghton was forty-four years of age. He was born July 4th, 1875, at Pond
Springs, Texas. Graduated from the University of Texas Law School at Austin with
the class of 1900, he came to Floydada in 1901 after a short residence at Brownwood,
Texas. From the time he came here until his death he enjoyed a large and remunerative
practice before the bars of this and adjoining counties, and made friends in
half a dozen counties, many of whom were here to do him honor Saturday afternoon.
He is survived by his wife, three daughters and one son, two brothers and two
sisters. The brothers are Dr. W. M. Houghton of this city and F. C. Houghton,
of San Angelo. The sisters are Mrs. A. B. Johnson of San Angelo and Mrs. Irene
Robinson, of Manor, Texas.
He was married to Bertha Ann Barber (daughter of Seaboard
Jones Barber and Frances Esther Gardner) on 30 Apr 1907 in
Waco, McLennan County, Texas. Bertha Ann Barber was
born on 19 Aug 1878 in Williamson County, Texas. She appeared on the census
on 14 Apr 1930 in Lubbock, Lubbock County, Texas.

RITES ARE TODAY FOR MRS. EWING
Funeral services for Mrs. R. L. Ewing, 83, 1720 Ave. Q, will be at 2 p.m. today
at Rix Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Dudley Strain, pastor of First Christian
Church, officiating.
Mrs. Ewing was dead on arrival at Methodist Hospital at 2:40 p.m. Sunday after
a heart attack.
A member of the First Christian Church, Mrs. Ewing moved to Lubbock from Floydada
in 1928. She had lived in Waco before moving to Floydada in 1907.
Burial will be in Floydada Cemetery under the direction of Rx Funeral Home.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Ted Houghton, Cone'; two daughters, Mrs.
J. F. Perryman, Austin, and Miss Edna Houghton, 2814 35th St.; four grandchildren
and a great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be F. A. Kleinschmidt, J. Harmon Jenkins, S. E. Marbutt, Jake
Abbott, C. D. Abbott, and C. E. Garrett.

Texas. She died on 7 Mar 2003 in Lubbock, Lubbock County, Texas. She was buried

Edna Houghton
RANSOM CANYON Graveside services for Edna Houghton, 95, of Ransom Canyon
will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Floydada Cemetery with the Rev. Bruce Parks
of Forrest Height United Methodist Church of Lubbock officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Englunds Funeral Service in Slaton.
She died Friday, March 7, 2003
She was born Feb. 26, 1908, in Floyd County. She attended West Texas State University
in Canyon and transferred to Texas Tech in 1926. She was the first woman to graduate
from Tech's School of Architectural Engineering in 1930. She taught art at Tech
in 1931.
She studied fashion in New York and returned to Tech. She received a Bachelor
of Fine Arts and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of South California
in 1955. During World War II, she worked with Consolidate Vultee in the design
and development of the B-36 bomber.
She retired from teaching in 1973. She moved to Ransom Canyon in 1975 and was
a member of the Architectural Control Board. She volunteered with the Lubbock
Humane Society.
Survivors include two nephews and a niece.
