My grandfather was a brand inspector and worked in law enforcement. They say if a man lived in San Angelo for more than six months during the time my grandfather was in law enforcement, he was able to not only recognize him but called him by name. (The population at that time for San Angelo was about 1,800 people.) Grandfather was one of the top ten cowboys in his day. He was still breaking horses when he was in his 70's. They called Grandfather "Smokey" Rutledge. He got this nickname when he lived in Mentone, Texas. Grandfather went around burning the huge kangaroo rat nests in the area, and people said you could always find him by his smoke trail.
