Vernon owned an auto dealership and other businesses in and around Los Angeles. He was a representative for Chevrolet for many years. He was also an artist, specializing in painting and sculpture. He won first second and third prizes at the Orange County Fair in its early years. After a difficult divorce, Vernon later settled in Coral Gables, Florida.

He was married to Emma Leticia Loomis (daughter of Fred D. Loomis and Effie Jewel Hamilton) on 8 Dec 1914 in Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California. ⁽¹⁰¹⁵⁾ He was divorced from Emma Leticia Loomis about 1955 in California. Emma Leticia Loomis was born on 3 Jul 1896 in Fresno County, California. She died on 19 Oct 1977 in Pasadena, Los Angeles County, California. ⁽⁵⁸⁸⁾ She was buried on 21 Oct 1977 in Mountain View Mausoleum, Pasadena, California.
