Russell Sr. was born on 29 May 1896 in Utopia, Uvalde County, Texas. He
died on 28 Jun 1954 in Del Rio, Val Verde County, Texas.

Funeral arrangements for George Russell Sr., 57, are pending at the Robert Massie
Funeral Home.
Mr. Russell died early Monday morning during the flood in Ozona while attempting
to reach the home of his son, George Russell Jr. Death apparently came from
a heart attack, although witnesses pulled him from the floodwaters on the west
side of Howard Draw. The body was flown to San Angelo by Dick Henderson, Ozona
rancher and private pilot.
Mr. Russell had been Crockett county and district clerk for 14 successive terms.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, George Russell Jr., and Hugh Russell, both
of Ozona; one daughter, Mrs. Lloyd Coates of Hugo, Colo.; three brothers, Claude
Russell of Ozone, Frank Russell of Odessa and Rex Russell of Midland, two sisters,
Mrs. Melvin Evans of Ballinger and Mrs. Bessie Richardson of Victoria; and three
grandchildren.
Crockett Clerk Dies During Flood
Funeral arrangements are pending here for George Russell Sr., who died Monday
during the flood in Ozona. Death came from a heart attack while Mr. Russell
was participating in rescue operations at the home of his son, George Russell
Jr.
Witnesses said the long-time county and district clerk fell in floodwaters Monday
on the west side of Howard Draw, which divides the town. The body was flown to
San Angelo by Dick Henderson, local rancher; and private pilot.
Mr. Russell, Crockett County and district clerk for 14 successive terms, and
a candidate for reelection this year, was born in Utopia, Tex., Sept. 30, 1896.
He came to Ozona when, three years old and attended high school there before
entering service during World War I.
In 1924 he married Miss Evelyn Rutledge of Sonora.
Mr. Russell was an oil field worker for a time near Burkburnett, and worked in
a garage and a drug company at Ozona. He was a deputy clerk for three years
under Tom Nolen before taking office as county and district clerk.
He was a member of the Methodist Church, the Odd Follows and the Masonic Lodge.
Survivors Include his wife; two Sons, George Russell Jr. and Hugh Russell; and
one daughter Margaret Russell.
