THE WOODLANDS ? Services for Howard Rutledge, 80, formerly of Lampasas and Balmorhea, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Briggs-Gamel Funeral Home Chapel in Lampasas.


Burial will follow at Rock Church Cemetery near Rumley.


Rutledge died Jan. 13, 2004, at his residence.


He was born Nov. 4, 1923, in San Angelo, the son of the late Theodore Cullen and Addie Marlar Rutledge.


After serving his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II, Rutledge received his master's degree from A&I University in Kingsville, which is now part of Texas A&M University.


He married the former Christine Silvas Ortego, who preceded him in death Jan. 12, 2004.


Rutledge was a retired educator and a principal and an ordained Baptist minister at the Baptist Church in Moline for several years.


He attended School Creek Baptist Church and Second Baptist Church while in Lampasas and the Sawdust Road Baptist Church in Spring.


Survivors include three sons, Howard Glenn Rutledge Jr. of Lampasas, Victor Ray Rutledge of Nashville, Tenn., and Carl Owen Rutledge of The Woodlands; a daughter, Anita Rutledge Moody of Pecos; three stepsons, Israel Ortega of Odessa, Andy Ortega of The Woodlands and Ephriam Ortega of Huntsville; three stepdaughters, Creedina Silvas of Temple, Birdie Nino of Odessa and Naomi Ortega of Fredricksburg; 13 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.


Rutledge was preceded in death by a son, John Edward Rutledge; and a granddaughter.


He was married to Billie Ruth Barton Pannell (daughter of Columbus Otis Barton and Ima Carrie Leola Morrison) on 12 Oct 1946 in Brownwood, Brown County, Texas. Howard Glen Rutledge and Billie Ruth Barton Pannell had the following children:

Christine Silva was born on 10 Sep 1927 in Alpine, Brewster County, Texas. She died on 12 Jan 2004 in The Woodlands, Texas. She was buried in Rock Church Cemetery, Rumley, Texas.

Mrs. Rutledge died Jan. 12, 2004, at a Houston hospital.


She was born Sept. 10, 1927, in Alpine, the daughter of Francisco and Paula Cano Silvas.


Mrs. Rutledge was married to Howard Rutledge, who died Jan. 13, 2004.


She was a homemaker, who had retired from nursing with Girling Home Health in Marble Falls.


Mrs. Rutledge was of the Baptist faith and attended Sawdust Road Baptist Church in Spring.


Survivors include four sons, Carl Owen Rutledge and Andy Ortega, both of The Woodlands, Israel Ortega of Odessa and Ephriam Ortega of Huntsville; three daughters, Creedina Silvas of Temple, Birdie Nino of Odessa and Naomi Ortega of Fredricksburg; two stepsons, Howard Glenn Rutledge Jr. of Lampasas and Victor Ray Rutledge of Nashville, Tenn.; a stepdaughter, Anita Rutledge Moody of Pecos; three brothers, Alfredo Silvas and Placido Cano Jr., both of Odessa, and David Silvas of San Angelo; five sisters, Lucia Nunez of Andrews, Ofelia Martinez of Odessa, Modesta Magallanez of El Paso, Maria Cano of Temple and Lydia Oyerbides of Monahans; 13 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.


Mrs. Rutledge was preceded in death by a brother, Celedonio Cano; and a granddaughter.
