MRS. JOHN A. SMITH
Mrs. John A. Smith, 92, died at 9:25 a.m. Wednesday at her home in the Redbud
Community. She had been seriously ill some three weeks and in poor health about
three months.
Funeral services were conducted from Briggs-Gamel chapel Thursday at 4 p.m. with
Minister Guy Southern Officiating. Interment was in David Cemetery near the
Redbud Community.
Lillie Gertrude Rutledge was born July 28, 1876 in Burnet County and lived her
life in this section. She was married Nov. 11, 1897 to John A. Smith and her
died in 1959.
Mrs. Smith had been a member of the Church of Christ for some 80 years.
Survivors include five sons, Rual Smith and Ivan (Buck) Smith, both Lampasas,
Raymond Smith, Melton (Bill) Smith and Helton (Bud) Smith, all of Killeen; five
daughters, Mrs. Ruby Castleberry and Mrs. Annie Watkins, both of Lampasas, Mrs.
Recie Nettleship and Mrs. Juanita Hendrick, both of Burnet, and Mrs. Ruth Russell
of Adamsville; 19 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and three great-great
grandchildren.
She was married to John Able "Sledgehammer" Smith Jr. (son of
John Able Smith Sr. and Martha C. Spradling) on 20 Nov
1897 in Burnet County, Texas. John Able "Sledgehammer"
Smith Jr. was born on 18 Aug 1869 in Dickson County, Tennessee. He appeared
on the census in Jun 1900 in Precinct #7, Burnet County, Texas.

on the census in Jan 1920 in JP #7, Burnet County, Texas.

1959 in Burnet County, Texas. He was buried in Davis Cemetery, Burnet County,
Texas.
Mr. Smith and his family moved to Burnet County from Tennessee in 1872. He was
a rancher, and rode horseback until past 80 years of age. Lived in later years
in Lampassas.
