Innocence Protection Act Advances in U.S. House and Senate
Posted: September 22, 2004
Just one day after the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee passed the
"Advancing Justice Through DNA Technology Act," a measure that includes the
Innocence Protection Act and that ensures access to post-conviction DNA testing
for those in prison with claims of innocence, the bill has been incorporated into
legislation introduced in the House Judiciary Committee.

On Wednesday, October 6, 2004, the US House of Representatives passed a new compromise
DNA/IPA bill called the Justice for All Act of 2004 (HR 5107). The bill combines provisions
from a victims' rights bill, which already passed the full Senate, with the Advancing Justice
Through DNA Technology Act (HR 3214/S 1700). The bill will help make sure that the criminal
justice system accurately identifies and convicts the real perpetrators of heinous crimes, and
that no more innocent people are wrongly sentenced to death.
