Neff Powell, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southwestern Virginia, visited Emmanuel on Sunday, December 7, the Second Sunday in Advent. In his sermon, he preached on the need for Christians to keep the "eyes of our hearts" open so that we may recognize the presence of God in Christ, and thereby be redeemed by Him. He then officiated as one church member was confirmed, and another reaffirmed his baptismal covenant. At the end of the service, he sat down with the children and talked about the life and work of Saint Nicholas. Afterwards, he joined church members at a reception held in his honor, sharing the blessings of fellowship in Christ's love.
Harvest Day 2008This year's Harvest Day, November 9, began with a big breakfast prepared by members of the congregation. The main service included a special rededication and blessing of the recently-restored "Emmanuel" stained glass window above the altar. Several relatives of Petronella S. Thomas, in whose memory the window was given to the church, were present at the ceremony. As was the case last year, the service featured folk music from Emmanuel's own "Harvest Band": Randy Hamblett, Matthew Poteat, Mary Evans Lott, and Sarah Groves-Humphries. After the service, members of the PAX youth group gathered outside in the Columbarium, where they had recently planted a copious number of tulip bulbs that will make for a beautiful spring next year.
Stop Hunger Now!Emmanuel's youth group PAX held a very successful STOP HUNGER NOW event on Sunday, Sept. 7 at Emmanuel, in cooperation with other church congregations. A substantial turnout of volunteers helped prepare emergency meals that are being shipped to Haiti, which has been devasted by multiple hurricanes recently. Following this event, PAX enjoyed a dinner and another "U2charist" service featuring (recorded) music from the Irish rock group U2. Thanks to Katherine Eastham and Meneta Deaton, leaders of the PAX group, and to all other who participated in this very special and worthwhile project. For more information, see the PAX Web site and the two photo galleries: Stop Hunger Now and Shopping For The Food Bank.
Stained glass window(s) restorationThe restoration work on the main "Emmanuel" stained glass window was completed in mid-summer, along with the Angel baptistry stained glass window at the right front side of the church. This work was expertly done by Raynal Studios, www.raynalstudios.com, and we thank them very much for their services.
Rogation Day 2008
The children of Emmanuel put on a play for Rogation Day, with the theme that there are many people who deserve thanks for the food we eat: parents, grocers, bakers, millers, and farmers -- and for the sun and rain without which no life would be possible. Diocesan council, 2008A large number of Emmanuel parishioners attended the annual council of the Diocese of Southwestern Virginia in Roanoke, on January 25, 26, and 27. The Right Reverend Katharine Jefferts Schori, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church U.S.A., was the keynote speaker and officiant at the Cathedral services, along with Bishop Neff Powell.
